Hi all, I am off to Africa in November to do a photo study in the bush with some very remote tribes
(and I am a little more than nervous at the moment!). You can read about the trip here
Basically here is a list of the kit I am taking with me:
Nikon D700 + grip with AA holder
Nikon D300s + grip with AA holder
Nikon SB900
Nikon 14-24mm 2.8
Nikon 24-70mm 2.8
Nikon 70-200mm 2.8
Nikon 50mm 1.4
Lee ND filters and holder
Rode Video Mic
FITP folding softbox
Lightweight Tripod
Spare AA batteries
8 EN-EL3's for the cameras
Asus Ee-pc netbook (very light and small)
48GB of memory cards
All of this will be going in a Tamrac Expedition 8X.
Now, I have upped my training schedule so I now go 4 times a week to the gym so that I can cope with the large amount of walking across the plains and the bush that I need to do.
Basically, I was wondering if anyone has done anything like this before and can offer some guidance on perhaps a better way to travel with this gear? What about changing lenses in the dust of the bush?
I was thinking about getting one of those photo vests that I can put the bodies in so that I dont have to keep taking off the tamrac pack everytime I want to take a shot, as I dont want to miss an opportunity. I know that also taking extras like the SB900, filters and the softbox might be a bit much but I intend to create some real art portraits over there and I would relish the opportunity to have at least a small chance at lighting them well... I was thinking about taking my lencarta safaris, but I would never be able to carry them and the battery pack
I know its a lot of gear to take, but this is a once in a lifetime chance to visit a tribe of people that have never really been in contact with westerners and I want to have a full range of kit to cover all eventualities.
I think I will spend most of my time with the D700 set ready to fire and the D300s ready for video at a moments notice...
any advice that anyone can offer on this kind of trip would be greatly appreciated
