Apologies as I know I've seen this somewhere before but I can't find it - where can I find a simple model comparison list of Canon v Nikon? What I mean is say 1D4 = D3s or whatever. I have no real idea how Nikons model number system works.

I'm gonna be upgrading body soon and am looking around the £700 - £1200 used area. And I'm getting very tempted to change to the dark side. I always loved Nikon build quality and feel when I used film years ago, and what I keep hearing about Nikon low light performance impresses me and I know their CLS system is a belter. If I am gonna change I want to do it now before I have too much Canon only kit. (I also know someone who is sponsored by Nikon so may be able to borrow the odd bit of glass if I ask nicely!!!)

Cheers,
pip

There is no direct comparison as all the cameras have different priorities and features.

Although you may have heard wonderful things about Nikon low light that's really the FF bodies, which are out of your budget. I'm yet to be convinced theres mcuh difference in APS-C world.

As for inbuilt CLS, if you stay Canon the 7D has the Canon equivalent.

I would go nikon if I was starting again. but the only nikons that really tempt me at the D300 and the D700, which are still quite pricey and in a different category to my canon 40D. The Nikon's that are comparable to the 40D don't tempt me half as much and a friend with a D60 regularly moans that the 40D has much better high ISO handling that his nikon

Thanks Grumpy. Interesting to hear only on FF. So both about the same on prosumer kit then?

This timeline shows the basic layout of their numbering syste pretty well clearly defining entry level, mid, high end, pro etc:

Thanks B3R, I'll have a look at that, looks helpful.

I'll check out the D300/700, they sound interesting (although maybe too pricey). Why would you go Nikon if you were starting again?
