I don't do rain, I prefer warm sunshine, however living in the UK I don't get much of that so rain is more often the option. Having just invested in some kit that cost more than anything I have ever spent on photography before, (D3, 80-200 f/2.8, 80-400 etc), I am more than anxious to look after it.

Yesterday was fine at the Bristol Kite Festival Taster Here but today with the Bristol Half Marathon starting at 9am it was well raining by 8am so I chickened out.

Could some of you seasoned togs please advise about the issue of taking equipment out in the rain or alternatively tell me what I should do to use it in the rain without looking like the 'bag-lady'!

The D3 is weather-proofed professional piece of kit-It needs to stand up to all types of weather, so don't worry about the body. On lenses, I use a UV filter and the seal between the body and lens is pretty robust-Get out there and take pics! Rob

Not a seal as such-The join between the lens and body- not water-tight, but a tight fit never the less. Rob

I also hate the rain and I have a simple solution - I stay in -

When the sun is shining I'm out and about taking hundreds of pics then when it rains I process them and usually put them on Flickr.

Much better than getting soaking wet.

Was up at Portrush, for the airshow, yesterday. Plenty of rain about :(

I took the kids up, so had erected a beach shelter and held the camera under the shelter most of the time. Did have to end up being a "bag lady" a few times, but I planned ahead and took a black bag to blend in

On a more serious note - perhaps something like this would suffice -

oh ok, just that some nikon lenses do have an extra rubber weather sealing rubber, will find a pic somewhere,

Haven't seen that Scott? I've got the 24-70mm F/2.8 and 70-200mm F/2.8 and neither has that seal-for the cost you would think they'd fit one? Rob

the nikon professional bodies do and can take a battering. You could dunk it if you wanted and it'd likely be fine.

If you're worried, the shower caps from hotels are useful way of waterproofing a camera, they're the perfect size. Just put the elastic around the top of the viewfinder. couple of sandwich bags and a bit of tape can neatly go over a flash or whatever.

Alternatively, if you're in the rain for long periods of time, think tank etc all do very good rain covers.

Hi Gramps,

lovely pictures of the Kite fair. Do they have these regularly or have I missed out this year?

Good suggestion already made for shower cap . just in case!

All the best

Hi Malcolm, Bristol hosts the International Kite Festival every year - for some years it was held on the Downs but more recently has found its home in the Ashton Court Estate and has grown to be a major City attraction.
This year flyers came from the US, Germany, The Netherlands and I believe Kuwait as one of the kites was in the form of the Kuwait national flag.
Apart from the kites there were the usual trade stands, (inc foods like chilli, pies and bean-meals), and stands from the police, St John's Ambulance, Heart FM and the Air Ambulance, whose helicopter, (equipped with mini paramedic!), attracted a great deal of attention.

Several things you can do:

Clear plastic bags over the lens

Wear a ruck sack and put an open umbrella between your back and the ruck sack. It will hold it there for you, not very comfortable mind but ok if you have a big jacket on :)

Nikon kit is really good in bad weather conditions...

I've used my D3 bodies in torrential thunderstorms, dust-storms and snow and ice with no dramas.

The lenses are equally good: used the ones you've mentioned in (additional to the above), monsoon rains in Africa, high humidity in belize and Brunei and blizzards in Norway while mounted on D2x bodies.

I use no waterproof covers as I just cannot get on with them...

Best thing about rain is it washes all the dirt off...

sorry, but as effective as that would be, it also sounds utterly hilarious for everyone else around them...
