I dont understand the current Nikon range...

It all used to so simple, but now its not.

My current body really needs upgrading - D200, and i dont have a clue what model I would buy.

Whats I really want is a new D400 I guess.

All the controls in the same place, but with way better high ISO and AF.

Without going FF, can someone enlighten me on how the range stacks up please ?
 
There is no true replacement for the d300s. It's either previous models, 'consumer models' or straight to the d800 and that's full frame.

Its the only one pre full frame thats worth going for imo. The body isn't anywhere near as good as the D300 in terms of ruggedness, but it is sharper, offers better ISO and the autofocus is updated also.
 
I assume that Nikon are either being very slow with a D300s replacement or they don't see a pro body DX camera as worth making. The D800 (and D610) are pretty impressive in DX crop mode...

Does the DX mode work well enough to not need to immediatly replace all my glass ? If os, the 610 could be good.
 
Nikon pro and prosumer line is full of gaps at the moment. They failed to properly replace the d300 and d700. Going to give it another year or so and then I might have to go Canon.
 
Nikon May be plugging this gap in September with a D800s. Time will tell, Nikon Rumours don't always come to fruition

Whether or not it nikon planned it to be so, the d800 is not a d700 successor in any practical sense.
