Yes
Went fishing yesterday for a bit of R&R and decided to take the camera just in case me and my mate Steve could get a feature for the mag. Travelling light it was a slimmed-down setup of just my D200 and 18-70mm - I felt totally naked and totally out of synch with my kit; no speedlight, no extra lenses, no battery grip - it just didn't feel right. It was so weird that I didn't know how to use my built-in flash, that's how much I've gotten used to and rely on my SB800.

Anyone else had a moment of realisation that they need, really need all of their kit to function properly as a photographer!! :)

I have made a conscious effort not to cart a load of gear around. One body and two lenses, lightweight bliss........:)

I take all or nothing, but have also been out with just one body and a 17-35...you're right - it does make you feel naked...

Last time i went to Loch OT Lowes, there was a guy there with that much equipment that he was taking up a full third of the hide,he spent that much time messing with his kit that he missed a load of shots. Then when the hide got busy his kit was getting moved about so other people could see. Me? I hate crowds so buggered off......:D

Before my recent round of upgrades and updates I could JUST take all my kit with me (leaving the 2nd body, flash and duplicated lenses) but only in the computrekker bag!. Absolutely got in the way having such a ridiculous bag when going out for a walk so I have been trying to slim it down and take just a subsection with me. Yes its not ideal and you always have a "blast I could do with the SB800" or "Why didn't I bring the 105vr" type moment :) I have found though that it is much easier and as such it goes out more often like that.

I have been wandering about with the old D70 & just the 50mm lately.
It makes you think a bit more about how to take shots. Most of which have been deleted!

Some of my most successful photography has been when I've restricted myself to one prime lens. I get to the point where I see in that focal length and photos are a lot easier to find. Highly recommended. :)

Nope, I used to but now I'd feel all fat, constipated and sluggish carting around piles of "just incase" gear...:)
Moto - Go out with an intention, take what you need, not what you think you might need for 11tybillion different scenarios.

The main problem I have is that when shooting for the mag, I need variety of shots, and styles, hence the need for various lenses and flashes. When I don't have the options available it just feels wrong, even though I know I could function with just the setup I had yesterday for snapshots. I suppose it comes down to how much you use your kit - mine's used 5-days-a-week for work and without it everything's just wrong. A bit like being forced to use a Canon 40D the other day - horrible :D

Ah, but did you go fishing or shooting.
I can safely say a 3 man team would be about right to do both..
Shooting for a mag is pretty specific, that's not a one body/lens scenario, I took my camera just in case, suggests you went to fish primarily.
I suppose you have to do one or the other.

I don't feel naked, I feel....free :D

No, but I have had a moment of realisation that I can go out with just the one lens. Sure, I might miss something that would have looked great at 200mm, but having just a small shoulder bag makes a day out a fair bit more enjoyable than one where I'm carrying half my weight in lenses.

I like traveling light, most of the time I just take my 5d, 24-105, spare card and battery in my pocket. Freedom.

I understand where OneTen is coming from. Just a single prime forces you to think and work harder. Last evening I took a drive to a local beauty spot with my full kit and spent more time trying to work out which lens to use than was probably useful. Came back with little of interest and figure I would have done much better with the 50mm. :(

I actually went out last night for a couple of drinks and didn't take my camera at all.

I said to my wife that it felt extremely weird not having it with me because I normally take my camera everywhere with me :(

I enjoy being restricted, you have to think a bit more then. Be a bit more creative etc.

Somtimes I'll be out with just my Zeiss Nettar, Zorki, or 30D and a few lenses.

Somthing to be said about traveling light!

You can spot an addict when they think a body and a few lenses is being restricted

Interesting post. I usually cart all my gear around with me in a rucksack as I hate the idea of a missed shot, although recently the idea of smaller shoulder bag with room for the body and a couple of lenses has really started to appeal..

I do too, from a personal photography approach that is, but for work where editors want a full range of shots, then I have to use everything between 12mm and 200mm, my usual working focal lengths.

I do keep meaning to get a prime, something like a 28mm or a 35mm (or even an old MF 20mm) but it's something that will have to keep for the time being

Joxby, we were there to fish but we did get a feature so it's a win-win :)

Sounds like an excellent pastime mixing pix with fishing...the definition of R&R.

Unfortunately, the win-win renders your nekkid out of sync non functioning photographerness, and withdrawal symptoms experienced through a perceived lack of equipment back up, completely unfounded...

I rest my case.....

:)

35mm on ff is nice to just carry about, that and maybe another roll of film

if I take my 50d i end up with spare lenses to cover 17-200mm and a speedlight and radio triggers and batteries and cards all 'just in case' :D
