I'd agree with the airport suggestion and, if you're making a snap decision, perhaps just stick to the big brands like Fuji, Canon and Nikon. Don't forget to make sure you've got enough memory cards too.
Some may disagree but my ex bought a vivitar from argos or tesco cant remember which just for point and shoot while on holiday, and you know what, for £35 it was a cracker honestly really easy to use and great IQ.
Not a class act but a good throw it in your bag kind of camera i found it great.
The missus and i had a Canon powershot A470 as a wedding pressie after step son broke my Fuji. The Powershot is a belter for the money, i really can not fault the features or teh quality and he paid less than £50 for it.
I'd recommend it, even though the rest of my stuff is Nikon..... (ducks for cover and pending Nikon/Canon argument and threads)
Got a Samsung P1000 from currys for about 80 something before going on my honeymoon in may this year... was light, sturdy and had some manual settings as well... got some cracking photo's with it and using the manual settings got some amazing pictures of the sunrise.
Not a patch on the SLR for usability but for a point and click I got some fantastic shots
