Well my 5D classic died along with my Canon 17-40L. I had a trip planned so bought a Canon 1DSmkII and Canon 16-35L II.

My insurance let me know I am going to receive a 5DmkII and 17-40L.

So now I have to decide what to keep! I have never used a 5DmkII but there are a few things I like the sound of on it and I have always been VERY interested in it, having really loved my 5D classic.

In terms of the lens I don't usually need f2.8 so I'm just going to see which is sharper.

Obviously I will use the two and compare when I receive the camera and lens but just wondering what people on here would do?!

I suppose it depends on your preferences. The 1D series are built like tanks and watersealed. OTOH the 5D Mk2 has more MP, Liveview and video (FWIW ;))
If weight is a consideration then the 5D Mk2 might be a better choice.
As for lenses, on full frame the 17-40 might show its weaknesses in the corners.
I owned a 1D Mk3 and loved it, but now I have a 5d Mk2 and 60D and am very happy with both.
 
If you 5d died through something that could have been prevented by a more sturdily made body then keep the 1d. In fact sell the 1dsmkII, 5DII and the 16-35 and get a 1dsIII and use that with the 17-40! :eek:

Thanks, I am leaning towards the 5DmkII but really love the feel of 1DSmkII and the weather sealing is great, also enjoyed the viewfinder and AF compared to my 5D classic.

I'm not bothered about video (although its a nice bonus!) but like the sound of more MP, microadjust, better screen, sensor cleaning, and weight - 1DS is a bit conspicuous.

:eek: That is a scary thought! Tempting, but I'm too scared to sink that much money into a body!
 
I think a lot depends of how far you intend on carrying your kit. Having owned a 1D series body they are heavy bits of kit and if you don't really need the awesome AF or the fast frame rates I'd stick with the 5D series (in fact I've gone from 1D2 to 5D as I'm doing more landscape work now) with the 5D2 you'll gain the sensor cleaning and newer menu structure and shed some weight.

I've not used the 16-35, but again, it is heavy. I guess if you have both see how you get on with them and keep the best...
 
If you don't need the cash, Why sell ?
Keep the other body and lens as a backup.

That is unless you wish to go for the 1DS3.
