For portraits...
Im thinking about getting a prime protrait lens, like the 50mm 1.4 or the 85mm 1.8.

Now the question, should I get the 85mm, will it be sharp enough compared to the 24-70?

Any other advice?

>should I get the 85mm,
I reckon you should, yes.

>will it be sharp enough compared to the 24-70?
I'd have thought it will be every bit as sharp.

There is something about taking away the ability to zoom that makes me think more about what I'm framing. Or at least makes me think differently anyway. Either way, it seems to be a good thing and I get "involved" with whatever I'm shooting more.

If it's any help, I have the 50mm f/1.4 and 24-70mm f/2.8 L.. they're both pin-sharp, provided you keep away from the largest apertures on the 50mm.

Totally agree with you on this one daz. I am seriously considering getting rid of my last zoom - 24-105 to complete my switch to prime only.

OP - I have not owned the 85 but the 50 1.4 was excellent at 1.4, and tack sharp from f2 onwards.

Primes encourage you to engage with the composition of the shot and experiment with angles. I love it!

Assuming the 24-70 isn't fantastically better than the 24-105 I have, you're not going to notice and decrease in quality with the 85 1.8. Fine little lens :)

I doubt that you will notice any difference in sharpness between your 24-70 2.8 and an 85 1.8. The difference will be in the very shallow depth of field you get at f/1.8.

Personally, for portraits on your full frame 5D2 I would find 85mm a bit too short, and 50mm far too short if you want a decently tight head and shoulders. I would go for the 100mm f/2 which is very similar, and just as sharp.

Do you need the shallow dof as Hoppy mentions or you need to shoot in low light? if the answer in no - there might be no point buying the 85.
