Hi All,

My mum has decided she would like a DSLR - whether this is a good plan or not remains to be seen but she has asked for my help in chosing one.

She knows someone who gets a friends & family discount for Pentax so it makes sense to go down this route. Problem is - I know nothing about Pentax.

She would be using the camera primarily for pictures of the grandkids and the dog. Could anyone give me a starting point of what you might recommend from the Pentax line to a newbie? I don't think budget is a big issue - but she doesn't need the most advanced / high end camera and I would have said £600ish.

Any help gratefully received!!

As said the K30 deals are very good even without any other discount - camera plus 18-55mm and 50-200mm WR lenses and battery for about £580.

The K5 is also more than worth having a look at. The camera plus the kit lens is a bit over your suggested budget (about £650) but with a discount the price could be in budget.

Best thing would be if your Mum could handle some Pentax cameras.

Like all other DSLR manufacturers Pentax make some excellent camera and the chance to get a discount makes the deal even better.

K30 seems like a good bet, 50 quid cashback and going by all iv'e read a very good camera

I like Pentax cameras and had a couple of their DSLR's, limited range of longer lenses, but not a problem for your mum

Handy having stabilisation built into the body and must say the colours they produce are the best I have seen from any brand

The K5 is an excellent camera, superbly built and capable of serious photography with a huge number if customisable settings.

It is also pretty compact although you certainly wouldn't describe it as light. It does feel like it would last years and has excellent weather protection
