Hi I Am a complete novis and know naff all about cameras and the man in curries was just trying to push super expensive things I can't even say so I thought I would ask here...

I am looking for a point and shoot camera that is suitable to use in Lapland this December, and hopefully underwater too.. I would like a good quality picture at the end of it as it is for memories etc.

Can anyone recommend anything?

cold snow and frost proof
Water proof
Kid proof

What's your budget? How far underwater do you want to go?

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT5 is reasonable all round camera, as it the Nikon Coolpix Aw130 but around £300

Cheaper theres other alternatives, depends what you want. The cheaper ones generall have less zoom, less features.
 
Not very probably a couple of meters max it'd just for the kids and water slides etc. Budget around £300 max.

Is it suitable for the cold too do you know xxx ps thank you xx
 
Not sure about models etc but you will want one that can shoot RAW images.
 
I reckon you'll be limiting your options of you look for a waterproof camera that also shoots raw. For a family/holiday camera I wouldn't be putting Raw support at the top of the list.

Really, why? I know the advantages of raw v jpeg, but in the case of this person, what do you think it would bring to introduce a processing step to see the images?

All of the lower end tough compacts will produce jpeg and mpg4 movies

Yes most of the tough ones will cope ok I think most are spec'd down to -10C. I have a Canon D10, looks a bit like a childs camera but produces good images. Latest version is the D30, not so kiddy looking and is somewhere around £200-220. 5x optical is about all you get, I have it as a beach/outdoor wet camera, but underwater it's rare you need to shoot very far

I have no idea what Raw is. I'm so rubbish.

A go pro sounds more suitable than most things. Good video, good stills, small, light, very hard wearing and can be used underwater.
