Hi People , any recomendations ?

Mackeeper gets terrible reviews and personally been using a mac for years without any need for such programs, that the beauty of macs compared to windows machines?

Me too never used one.

don't have a mac but I use avast on everything.

OK thanks Mackeeper now in the bin , Have installed Avast Free see how it goes , They do a 3 year full plan for £100, 2 year for £67 and 1 year for £30

It all depends on your personal workflow, if you visit lots of dodgy sites, the malware and virus stuff is needed, if you never open a iffy email or visit dodgy sites then you are pretty much never going to have a problem, most viruses are self inflicted.

In 20 years of owning Macs, I have never used any antivirus software. And never suffered any issues. Not to say that it isn't possible for such things to affect Macs, but that's my experience. Not a single other Mac owner I've known has ever used AV either.

I dont do those sites and never open any email I dont recognise , Have done a scan with Avast and it came up clear , No infections

What avast does well ( paid for version) is protect you against scams and ransomware it also comes with VPN so even your provider can not track you. and it has a secure browser

Don‘t bet your life on that, read the terms, data is collected albeit a small section, but never the less it’s is not a 100% secure vpn by any means.

Other free options are BitDefender and Malwarebytes. And the paid-for CleanMyMacX includes malware scanning, including real-time, as well as keeping your drives free of caches and other unnecessary junk.

Sophos Anti-Virus is free for personal use on the Mac.

This is a decent AV client.

Another mac user here 20 odd years and never used any anti virus

what I find strange is that there are now almost as many Virus and other attacks on apple platforms as on PC's
Yet most Apple user do not use any form of protection against any form of attack.

Does this mean they are unaware that successful attacks have taken place, or perhaps data stolen.

There are of course many PC users who do not have any form of protection either.... which encourages attackers to do what they do.

Another vote for Sophos. The likelihood of a virus, etc, affecting a Mac is fairly remote, but it’s easy enough to pass one on by forwarding an email which has a bad attachment.

I am curious as to where this info comes from, I personally have never encountered a virus on any of my Macs and I'm going back to the days of system 6.

do you mean phishing emails ???? as I do get a few of them, but I just laugh at them, I do not need £2.000.000 putting into my bank from a Nigerian prince

And as for Mackeeper, I regard that as a PUP as do many others, stay well away from such software.

I too have never experienced a virus on my Macs. Neither had I when I ran Windows, because I kept a/v up-to-date.

It reminds me when I worked in IT for a certain major supermarket chain. I was in a meeting where the directors decided not to put any sprinklers into their stores ”because we’ve never had a fire“.

Technically, that's possible and nasty things may exists. We do however have to realise that MAC and Linux systems face very different level of threats to Windows devices.
It all depends on the setup, but basically, macs are mostly really open to user space threats, whereas win will be hijacked at the system level. And due to simple proportion of devices most parasites will target Win machines and android phones.

I think before you get AV for unix-like systems (mac to android), you have to first of all consider good working practices:

1. Enable firewall. Mac has one built in.
2. Do not ever use admin level account for any day-to -day work. Also applies to windows, just as anything.
3. Think before opening and trusting anything you don't know.
4. Keep system and web browser always up to date.
5. Run regular backups.
6. Always use dual verification for all important web services.

That will save you 98% of all troubles.

If you don't, here is what will happen:
1. You will get hacked quite quickly, get a rootkit installed on any system, etc. Even AV won't help you if serious professionals are on it.
2. You are just asking for crapware to be installed system wide at every opportunity.
3. Most security breaches happen due to user mistakes. Some even disable AV to let crap take over (i.e. installing pirated software), and / or hand out bank acc access to friendly guy over the phone.
4. Leave a known hole and you have it coming.
5. Apart from HDD failures and incidental deletions, system could be encrypted by criminals with all sorts of demands (mostly win systems)
6. Fancy someone in your main email, paypal and bank account?

On a mac realistically you are facing mostly browser level exploits depending on sites you visit. Go to dodgy porn sites and you will be loaded with them instantly. If you still must, you can use different browser, different user account, harden system policies and block known problem ips at hosts file. Use linux on virtual box for the worst of them

Let's hope you all know not to open email attachments from strangers (how would you like a virus or a child porn on your machine to set you up?)

If you are prone to getting into deep sheet maybe do get AV, but for most risk level is much lower on a mc.
