I met a really nice man today...

No, I didn't say I knew how, the first thing I said to him was I had no idea with studio lighting, as I have never really worked in a studio before!

He also doesn't really know much about lighting, he uses trial and error mostly hehe!

Which, tbh, with the help of my cousin (modelling for me) is how I'll probably learn most of it!
 
Okay, I don't know any technical terms, so I'll just describe them lol!

He has 5 lights in total, 4 backgrounds, white, black, yellow and blue...

The lights: there are two with like umbrellas on them, think one is a 200W and the other a 250W

Two have like a big square bit of fabricy stuff on the front! (see, really not technical hehe)

and one is a spotlighty one!

the square is a softbox it makes soft directional light
the umbrellas are umbrellas you either get white shoot through ones (they work like a softbox) or shiny silver ones that give sparkly eyes
the spot lighty thing is either a grid spot or a snoot or both

all these are mods bolted to lights

start with one light then try two then maybe 3, a black background needs no lighting

think about soft versus hard light, read strobist.com its for hotshoe flashes but it teaches you about light hard vs soft

It is very useful, and it's only a few miles from my house! So awesome in that respect. Any advice I'm getting atm is very much appreciated as I really do have no clue! But, I shall be going down soon, so there may be pics up from my efforts!
 
GLK - when you use a softbox, you don't HAVE to point it straight at the subject...if you put it close, just out of shot close, and angle it a bit, so you then light the subject by using the spill out the side of the softbox (not dramtic angle, say 20 degrees or so....workon it a bt at a time, increase in stages) you get much softer lighting again than even the softbox gives you, because you aren't using directional light.

There is somethng to try to get you going. - Don't forget to meter the flash for aperture. You can forget your shutter speed. Set camera on M, set shutter to 1/125 (if it synchs at 250 or slower - check) and then you only have to aletr the f stop according to the power of the light - or the light power to match your f stop. It doesn't have to be critical, 1/3 stop close enough, even a 1/2 stop won't worry.
