I need a lamp to help me work!

The room where my computer is has a single 100 watt lightbulb, and an uplighter in the corner. I can't help think this is throwing off my colour management a little, so I'm considering a light for my computer desk, but which one? I know you can get lamps for different purposes and with different colour temperatures... I know this is an odd request but can anyone offer any suggestions?

The monitor is a light source so it will not be affected by ambient light. Put a printed page next to it though and that will be.
There are specialist fluorescent lamps designed to reproduce the colour rendering of daylight. They are only in tubular form and large 'folded' style PLL only. Plus you don't really want something like that in a domestic room.

Philips make a blue bulb that is supposed to be daylight like but I have no idea where you would buy one nor if it works

You could get a compact fluorescent desklamp that takes a 11W PL lamp and buy a new lamp for it with a colour temp of 4000 (cool white). still not true daylight though

Colour matching under artificial light is not a generally good idea. Being partially colour blind I would not attempt under any light

..just priced up a couple of those bulbs, 3.50.. but with the packing etc you end up paying 9.50 :hand:

Actually to be nerdy for a mo, the colour of the light falling on the screen will affect how you percive the colours it renders. If you compare the amount of light thrown out by the monitor compared to an average room light, the room light is usually more than enough to be the dominant force.

A bit like when you use a flash, it will quite easily overpower a normal tungsten bulb.

Something which emits light has a colour appearance. When that light falls on something else it illuminates it and renders the colours of the object - colour rendering.

The room light is the dominant light on objects in the room. Unless it is unusually powerful a room lit object does not match the luminance of the monitor by a considerable margin. Hold a sheet of white paper along side your monitor and compare the exposure needed for each with your camera.

A well lit room compared to a dark room will change your perception of the contrast/brightness of the monitor. I just held the desk lamp near my monitor and saw no colour change (but then I probably wouldn't )
