I have had a ratch around Google and everything points toward no, it is not supported.

I don't yet have an i-phone as I am waiting to get out of my, nasty, nasty, nasty Orange contract ( they stiched me up on the contract and are being very, very, very unhelpful ! )

Anyway, I digress - I use Thunderbird on my Mac as I just could not get my mail server to talk with Mail, it was a breeze with Thunderbird and now I really like it.

If Thunderbird is not supported would it be possible to tell my mail server from my domain to send mail to both Thunderbird on my desktop and an App that does work on the i-phone ?

I am a bit crap at all this to be honest !
 
You should be able to set it to download and keep a copy on the server.

My mobile phone does this with my pop3 mail. I can read my emails on the go...but download them to my PC when I'm home too :)
 
I have an iphone and use both hotmail and gmail for email purposes.

The iphone happily downloads my mail on the go and it is still available via the online hotmail, and gmail sites.

As I remember it there was a setting within gmail that allowed my mail to exist on numerous platforms.

By this I mean I can download my mail to my phone and also my PC/Mac and any changes made on the PC will be visible on the phone and vice versa.

I'll check my settings and come back to you as I'd expect that you can do this with any pop3 mail provider.
 
Within gmail I had to enable IMAP Access.

As an aside who do you use for email purposes?

As has been pointed out, you should be able to tell Thunderbird to 'leave a copy on server' and probably also an option for 'leave a copy on server for x days', which menas that after Thunderbird has downloaded an email from your email server it leaves it in place for x days before deleting it.

Because it is left on your server, it means that the iPhone can connect and collect a copy as well (and you'd tell the iPhone to leave a copy on server too, but not with an x days limit, as you want the computer to control when emails get deleted off the server).

The only thing I'd point out is that the Mail App on the iPhone is based around the Mail app on Mac OS X, so you may want to double check you can get your email working on Mail app. I'm sure you will be able to, but you did mention you had troubles with it to begin. Would have to be something v. weird for it not to work.

In short to answer your question: yes. :)
 
I have problems getting the iMail app to work with the email addresses on my mail server, but never had a problem with the mail on my iPhone. In fact, I now prefure to use my iPhone to read mail then my macbook pro.

Oh and Orange are *******s if you try to leave, but I somehow managed to get transfured to a superviser who I had a long conversation with, and he let me go, thanked me for my feedback, and even offered me a free prepaid phone, so there are some good people at Orange.
 
Cheers guys, I use Freeparking. we;; that is who my domain is with, I don't really have a clue what I am doing but I know I tried for ages to get my @ianwoodphotography working on Mail, then I heard about Thunderbird and it was sorted first time !

It is a battle with Orange, I am annoyed because I have been with them so long, I am always civil with them, not even an attempt at asking me to stay, not that I would as I want to go now, we have fallen out of love.

Got it 14/03/08, I am 'Eligable' 02/11/09, now in my book that is not funny, if I was told I was signing an 18 month contract I would have gone across to the O2 shop there and then, Orange ripped me off in my opinion and I am not happy about it, they are just not interested though, not one little bit !
