I tend to find offering unsolicited advice usually ends up with a bad response, no matter what the subject is...
Mind you in photography, you can get the same reaction if you happen to ask someone for advice when you are out "in the field" too. I've yet to find anyone who hasn't been anything but scorning if I've asked... So I made my mind up quite early on to never be like that!
Instant hostility! He loftily informed me that he was a pro photographer and that he'd probably forgotten more about photography than I knew and to kindly keep my opinions to myself, which of course I did.
Haha what a prize ****. I was at sealife yesterday, the amount of people with P&S shooting with flash (despite the signs saying not to) was crazy. I lost count of the amount of comments "there's something wrong with this camera" or similar I heard.
As for the OP, I'm going with the batteries theory. He already helped out with them and he wouldn't have if he was an up himself idiot. Probably trying to be helpful, even if it didn't come across that way.
Perhaps you should have asked him to get you on a photography course at Hogwarts! Once completed your piccies would then be truly magical. On the other hand you could have asked him to lend you his Janet & John book, when he has finished it of course
