I Think I Need A New Laptop

I currently have an HP6735 with an AMD Turion dual core processor and 4GB of RAM. I'm considering getting Photoshop Elements 10 but I fear if I install it onto my current machine that it will grind to a halt as it's already painfully slow.

I could probably look into clearing out some unused and little used software that i've downloaded over the years, de-fragging etc. to try to speed it up but would it make much difference?

I'm thinking that I would be better just getting a new laptop (it needs to be a laptop due to having nowhere to put a desktop) and keeping that only for photo editing and installing Elements onto that.

My question is what would be the best option around the £400 mark for such a laptop? I see a lot of people recommending I3 and I5 processors these days, are they the best option?

Hi, I wrote a Newsletter article a couple of months ago, about buying a computer on a budget. It does warn you to avoid buying anything beginning with the letter "A" (Acer, Advent, Asus. But ignoring Apple and adding Packard Bell - owned by Acer).

That seems to be a real bargain to me at that price. The Dell Outlet can be a great place.
 
I'm guessing your laptop wasn't slow when it was new, so maybe a fresh install of Windows would do the trick.

You're right it wasn't slow when it was new but is is getting pretty old now. Running Windows Vista sp2 (or is it sp3?) I got a virus on the laptop a couple of years ago and basically had to get Windows re-installed. IIRC within a couple of months it had slowed down a bit again.

I'm going to have to speak to the bank manager (wife) before buying any new toys so it may be that I end up doing a re-install!
 
If she's like my bank manager, it will only get approval if it is affecting her or it is completely broken. They don't understand that we need new toys every so often!
