I think my 40D may be faulty

OK, been using the 40D since last year with no problems, until this month. So far, on 3 occasions this month the camera has "hung" for a second or so. It takes the picture fine but it seems that the mirror locks up then drops a second later. Mirror lock up is not on. Happened today whilst photographing the dog. Shot of about 10 pics in sports mode, half way through it hung. When I reviewed the pictures they were all exposed correctly so I assume the shutter is not sticking as that would have caused one of the pictures to be over exposed.

I purchased the camera in May 08 so it's still under guarantee for 2 more weeks. Am going to take it back to the shop this week, but I know what a pain intermittent problems can be to find and fix. Problem is I can't wait for it to get worse so they can see it as the guarantee may very well run out by then.

So, I just wondered if anyone else has had this problem on their 40D.

If you're shooting Raw with the drive at full speed, maybe the buffer is filling up. In which case, the camera will lock until is has downloaded to the card. Easy enough to check. If that is the problem, either give the camera a moment or two between bursts, or shoot JPEGs.

Was shooting in jpeg. Stopped after about 5 pictures. It's as if you've just taken a long exposure shot, and about a second after pressing the button the mirror drops back.

Nope this is exactly what happened to my 40d. I'd take a shot, the mirror would lock up and I'd get Err99. I'd have to take the battery out to reset the camera.

It ended up being a faulty shutter which Jessops repair service took 7 1/2 weeks to tell me they couldn't get the bits and were sending it off to Canon for repair. I ended up with vouchers as a replacement and bought a 50D.

Best get it looked at asap.

Might be worth looking at the latest release of firmware to see if this lists a fix for this

The shutter on my 40d developed a fault-the mirror would lift, but shutter wouldn't open.
Spoke to Canon, sent to Lehmanns, was told it'd be 10 working days & they got it back to me wokring perfect in less than a week! So give either Canon or Lehmanns a call

Jessops used Calmunet - couldn't say I'd recommend them as they gave me the run around every two days for 7 1/2 weeks

Took it out this morning and took 50 shots with it, no problem. As there is only 2 weeks guarantee left and I don't want to get into an argument with Jessops about the sale of goods act (and the six years) I'm going to take it back to them this week before it runs out. I know they may have trouble diagnosing it if it's so occasional but I'd rather do it this way - at least it will be logged with them I had the problem before hand.

Hope it won't be away for 7 weeks though :'( I'd get really bored.
Yes, running latest firmware. ;)

Thanks for the replies.
