Well I've spent the day scanning negatives and removing scratches, and I still love the tonality of film. It's perfect! :D

A Lot of these shots weren't possible on digital due to the lattitude of the film.

I'm starting to prefer BW400CN over XP2, it seems to have smoother tones and a tad less grain.

Good bunch I do like the last one

Nice - like the one with the train and the last one - it has real depth.

Those are really nice. What film is it? I've been using HP5+ up until now but I'm looking for something with a little less grain.

Nice! are you developing your own film?

All on the Flickr Links - first three are Kodak BW400CN film, the last 2 Ilford XP2+. They're both C41 Chromagenic B&W films which can be developed on the high-street, so I'm guessing that's probably what Alans done here, probably scanning them himself (guessing from the Plustek OpticFilm 7200 scanner in the EXIF - "shop" scans usually reference some Fuji appliance, whose name escapes me for the moment!)

I have to say the detail and fine grain in that first one are just superb! Looks like that film is a winner and the scanner is doing a bloody good job too.

These were all processed by Genie imaging, cant say as I'm 100% satisfied since somehow there's a fine grit well and truly pressed into the emulsion of the XP2 roll 9and to a lesser extent on the Adox 25) as well as a strange pattern along both edges. The scanning is done here as noted on a Plustek optic Film 7200 and Silverfast SE, not using presets just altering the levels individually for each frame is all thats required.

The BW400CN is really coming out tops, as said it's got a lovely tonality to it and the grain really is none existent almost. It does come at the expense of contrast though, it's a bit flatter than XP2.

Here's something on Adox:

Strange to hear re: Genie. I have had no problems with them before. It might be worth contacting them to ask what has happened. I have it a little easier as they are actually not that far away from me and if necessary I can pop in. In fact I walked past their place on Wednesday whilst out for lunch!

I've still not ruled out a theory that it was dust that got on the film in camera and got pressed in as it was wound on, but I've used that camera (OM2) hassle free many times and when developed locally there was no issue with any negative that came from it, so at present there's still an unexplained element.

I've got some non critical rolls of 800Z to send them so we'll see how that goes.
