Hi Guys

I have been building my own computer and it has been hellish, I am definitely buying a prebuilt one next time. . Finally got everything running and windows installed,

But it thinks all the ports are USB 1 (front and the ones attached the motherboard) ,They are supposed to be USB 2.0. All my devices are) I have the latest Bios system according to scan, I have installed all the motherboard drivers, CPU drivers etc, Upgraded to Service pack 3 (window XP),

What have I done wrong?

Cheers Stuart

Thank you for your help Neil.

Every time I plug something in (which is USB 2) a pop up comes up telling me the device could run faster. I then open the display and it tells me that all my ports are USB 1 it say I must add the "HIGH SPEED USB controller"

Where is that then? :D It took a full fifteen minutes to get my photographs off the camera last night!

Steve I have followed the link I am unsure how to follow the instructions "Define your MSI BIOS device model."

Cheers for your help

Stuart

check in device manager, look under universal serial bus controller. if it says standard enhanced pci to usb host controller you're ok. If not, it needs an update

Right guys, my USB reads "Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller" So there is nothing enhanced there!

The Bios is "merican Megatrends Inc V1.5 09/12/2009" I thought that USB 2.0 had been about since 2002?

I was looking at updates from MSI website, it reads "MSI takes no responsibility for any damage caused by improper use or lack of technical expertise"

http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1812

How easy is it for me to distroy this computer?

Are the USB drivers the same as the Bios drivers?

Cheers Stuart

Well that was terrifying. Ran the automatic update, it said the mother board needed updating, igonred the warnings telling me I better know what I'm doing, (It said I should be a Professional, Thank god I have a degree in Neuroscince! :D) went through all the steps, it reset its self and that turned on and came up with the a DOSy error "bad cmos check sum" Went into settings saved it with out changing anything then rebooted and it went back to normal, (phew)

I now have "American Megatrends Inc V1.12 04/08/2010" as my bois and when I plug in a USB 2.0 device.... Nothing still thinks its USB 1! :(

usb2 is built into xp, the motherboard manual is as helpful as a chocolate teapot. maybe in the integrated peripherals option in the bios you can set the bios to full speed/hi speed, it may be on high speed thats usb1

Rather than muck around, why not just buy a PCI USB 2.0 card - will only cost you around a fiver?

AH thats another annoying thing.

IF the computer boots up and everything is OK then It just displays a useless splash screen and then XP starts to load immediately, So I don't know how to access BIOS, I've looked and I can see any "press f8" at any point.

Did you not get a driver cd with the motherboard? If so stick that in and follow the instructions. If you have done that then I would say reformat and reinstall as your xp install could be borked, it does happen from time to time.

To enter the bios, try "del" or F2.
F8 is normally the boot sequence selector

Don't get me wrong, I used to love XP, but you wouldn't be having these problems with 7...Windows update is quite effective!

Switch it on and keep pressing 'Del' key... if that doesn't work try the same again with the F2 key.... one of them will more than likely get you into the BIOS.... but it's more than likely you do only have USB1 on the M/B, so I wouldn't waste a lot of hours on it....

you need to hit the del key as soon as you power on, keep tapping it like your playing decathalon on the zx81 until you get into the bios

cheers guys. I've taken a peak at my BIOS, relating to my USB I had two options Enable or Disable, It was enabled and I'm guessing not to expect high performance if I disabled them! so I left everything as it was.

I think Dek Hogs Idea is fantastic and I will pop in to PC world tommorow.

If they want any more than around £8 tell them to go whistle - I've got a couple here, and I'm happy to send you one if you just cover the postage...

EDIT: They sell them for £9.99 - if you can wait until Wednesday I'll get one posted on Tuesday if you want?

As said above keep pressing the del key after switching on and you should enter the BIOS screen (typically blue with white writing). There should be a menu item for "Integrated Peripherals", in that screen you should find a setting for High speed / Full speed / legacy USB. If it's there then make sure the settings are for High speed (full speed is slower )

Just had a quick look at this and MB clearly states usb2. Usually XP will sort this out but to be sure check the cd that came with the MB and look for any driver updates. If still showing usb1 go into device manager and look to see if there are any exclamation symbols next to the usb controlers.

If so or you still cannot get usb2 you could (as suggested) try re-installing xp just incase it was a bad installation or failing that contact the MB support here:

I have just got my computer the way I like it! I did install all the drivers that came with the Motherboard,

DekHog is very kindly supplying me the PCI USB device if this solves my problem I will be very happy. as I only need USB 2.0 ports for the wireless 802.11 and data transfer. My mouse and printer seem realvitly happy on USB 1

Cheers Stuart

maybe the fact you installed the dirvers off the disk that its done this. can you uninstall the usb drivers (or chipset as the case may be) from add/remove and let windowz update try and take care of it ?

Stuart... posted today, so should be with you tomorrow...
