Ok, well i have been using moonfruit (drag and drop style site builder) for a while now and think its time to change to something like wordpress/joomla etc

i dont really want anything too fancy, just something nice and simple, more of a showcase site than anything else (and i have free web hosting off a mate which is a bonus!)

Now i have installed both joomla and wordpress to have a play with and to a novice its bloody confusing so which would you recomend for me?

Joomla is a good choice too, easy to work with good amount of free templates that you could use and redo, good amount of plugins that could serve you well.
 
Joomla is a nightmare for administration. It's very tech-centric and unintuitive.

If those are your 2 choices, go for Wordpress.

I use DotNetNuke, which is far more powerful than Wordpress, but still very easy to administer. However, that requires a Windows server.

Wordpress will let you do things up nicely for a mostly static site, but won't give you a lot of options for adding functionality. You'll need Joomla or DNN or something like that for a more robust solution. But since you said just simple, then WP should be fine.
