i7-12700 vs i5-14400

trying to find a desktop for lightroom.
I came accross these two choices?
which is best for lightroom?
i7-12700 more core but a bit older and a little less clock speed
i5-14400 less core but a little more recent and slightly faster clock speed.

would I see a difference between the two for lightroom or will the first one became obsolete sooner as it is a couple years older?
 
The i7-12700 is better. LR uses multi threading so cores matter. That i7 has 12 cores (8 performance cores + 4 efficient cores) with 20 threads, whereas the i5-14400 has 10 cores (6 performance + 4 efficient) and 16 threads.

A Google of benchmarks also suggests that that i7 is about 15% faster than the i5 too (don't just go on clock speed as the processor different)

They sit on the same motherboard socket so obsolescence risks the same
 
I use this site LINK for checking CPU's, GPU's etc. It's not perfect, but does give a decent indication when used for comparing and I've been caught out in the past with processors as there can even be fairly modern i5's that are horribly slow.

It may make very little difference, depending on what you are doing.

Whilst editing, the single core speed will make a bigger difference, along with the video card.

I would guess this is not for a business, so bring the price into it as well :)
 
Seeing this thread prompted me to review my choice CPU back in 2023 when I built this PC.
IIRC I did compare my i5-13600K to an i7 but in bang for buck terms at the time I went with the i5

It may no longer be comparable to the much newer ones but still holds its own ;)

I found someone that built PC and talking with him to find something fairly good. I'm sick of Pre-built laptop that comes with tons of bloatware and brand software that try being clever but just creates problem. I'll let you know. The i5-14400 is a tiny bit cheaper than the i7-12700. Because I'm providing the nvme SSD and also a sata SSD. I think I should get something very decent for about £700 which includes the i5-14400, 32gb ddr4 and RTX 5060 in a nice case with 3 fans but no crazy RGB leds. I'll let you know in a few weeks when I've done the move.

After seing your post I think the i7-12700 was not much more money so I might go with that.
