Id, help!!

First of all I have no picture so you'll have to bare with me!
The last couple of weeks I've been commuting between clevedon and burnham on sea junction on the M5, and I've noticed huge floc's of a type of bird that I'm unsure of, there fairly small there basically dark on top with white underbelly!
When I drove passed this morning there were 100's if not 1000's up in the sky!
When I came home this evening I was gonna risk stopping and getting a picture but there was already someone doing that!!
Any idea there bigger than a swallow or swift!!

From looking at pics of these 2 birds I would say no!!

Bramblings are known to gather in large numbers at this time of year but they're smaller than either Redwings or Fieldfares.

Lapwings maybe?

Golden Plovers perhaps?

I thought a ringed plover but looks like there lapwings!! Quite a site to be honest!!! Very distracting when in the air!!

I was going to say Lapwings.

You'll often see them flipping and tumbling in mid air.

They're also known as pyewipes in some areas......
