Hi guys n gals, One of our head teachers wants to do a photography competition for the school. The little urchins will go out and take shots and enter them in the school comp.

The head has asked me if we could come with some themes or subject to put the comp under. Please note the the kids are around the 9/10 age range.

So A list of ideas would be great, any ideas????

Many thanks in advance to you all for your help.

Maybe we could get a few of you to be judges or do a poll vote on here for the winner? Who knows....

Themes are easy, just has to be suitably ambiguous.

Big
Colour
Speed
Morning
Soft
Cold
Wet
Rough

Should be quite easy for your average 8-10 year old...

Hows about:

Happy
Sad
Colour - potentially you could give them a certain colour to photograph
Big
Small

All fairly similar to what Big_Ham suggested but I would be more inclined to give them more specific intructions with their theme. For instance get me a photo of something that makes you happy or shows your favouraite colour, I think they'd relate and understand this better.

Hope this helps ;)

What about facial expressions, each have to find one subject to express 4/6 facial expressions.

Happy
Sad
suprised
dissapointed
ect
ect

This could also help with communication skills, the one with the most consistent results wins.

I think "Happy" and "Sad" are probably a bit too vague for 9/10 year olds. I remember at that age I was excited by concepts such as 1 cubic centimetre being the same volume as 1 ml of water (Holy science, Batman!) - so someone asking me to take a picture of what made me happy would have come across as almost childish!
Perhaps linking the themes to what they're currently learning might be a good idea, as that way they have inspiration from their lessons? Personally I would try and narrow down the topics slightly; I imagine that if you're too ambigious, you're going to get a lot of photographs of the same thing...

lol,

I'd go with kids things, such as:

Colour
Movement

or maybe something to get them out and about?

People/the public
Environment
Nature

How about: 'Teachers hard at work'

Nah! ... forget that idea .... :D

skies
trees
houses
people
traffic

I've done something similar with students under the theme of 'literacy' for an academic project. But the theme works just as well with kids, especially kids who are primed to know what literacy is at its most basic level (i.e. reading and writing) because the word is used every day in the classroom.

Ask them to go out and take photos of how literacy is used in the community (e.g. on street signs, painted on roads, advertisements in windows, someone consulting a shopping list in a supermarket, an old man doing a crossword on a park bench, a slogan on a t-shirt). I think you'll find that this is a stimulating topic for both teachers and pupils, and the head might even be impressed by its links to the curriculum :)

p.s. talk to you soon about that other thing we discussed a while back.
