If I sold the 60D... get what?

Hi,

After getting a 5D (the original one) I find myself going to that all the time and the 60D isn't getting much light despite being a great camera, especially with magic lantern loaded which I use primarily with the live view and its great focus assist tools.

I am mindful that its winter so much of the things I would use it for - i.e. birds in flight, bug macro and so on - aren't in plentiful supply.

I'm considering moving back to the 7D again for the AF, however am holding back due to the noise which used to bug the hell out of me.

Would it be worth moving to the 5D2 to get that live view and magic lantern on a full frame for macro and rely on the centre point AF for other stuff, or hold back until either the 7DII or 5D3 as I'm in no real rush other than loosing a bit of resale value on the 60D?

Or perhaps even a 1DIII, although I admit to not knowing much about them other than second hand they're usually around £1200 with apparently great AF.

What would you suggest?

Hi

I think the only major factor that would effect the 60D used price significantly is if Canon launched its replacement.

It sounds like the crop factor would be of benefit to you, so I'd be tempted, following your reasoning above, to hold off forces while and see if / when the 7D replacement is launched or the new 5D and see what the new bits on it are and if it's worth getting.

Hope this is of help ...

isn't the 60d sensor the same as the 7d not sure how it could be noisier unless you had noise reduction to high or low. Any of the new upcoming cameras will be much more expensive than the out going models because of the strong yen. The prices of the current cameras must be hurting canon profit wise. Always a difficult choice if you love your classic 5d might be worth hanging on for the mk3 or pick up a mk2 when someone moves on cheap.

Cheers chaps - actually its odd, despite the sensor the 60D isn't as noisy - here is a little proof (60D vs 7D - NR off on both.) but I saw it with my own images so don;t really want to get too bogged down in that argument.

I must admit the thought of the 5DII just to combine, FF, ML and a good live view really seems like the all in one for everything apart from the AF for difficult stuff like BiF and running kids (namely mine!), but also the promise of what the new processor can do with ISO.

The 70D is due to be released later this year and word is on the "International" forums that it could be released in time for the Olympics. If that does happen, then I think the value of the 60D will take a dip.

That doesn't seem to make much sense. How many pros will be using a xxD at the Olympics?

Not many I guess.

However, how many people will there be at the Olympics who have an older DSLR that they have been meaning to upgrade and could be persuaded to get the best prosumer camera that they can afford for this which for many will be a once in a lifetime event.

Much bigger market in my opinion.

Hmmmmnnn...... which way to go? I love talking about gear choices John :)

If you are spending most of the time with your 5D then I would suggest letting the 60D go now and wait to see what Canon bring out.

In your shoes were I to shoot much and indeed birds in flight then I would consider getting the 1D3 since, as explained to another member, it covers all your bases. Excellent frame rate, AF and produces clean images. Fellow member Canon Bob rates it's sensor even higher I believe than that of the 1D4. The 1D series was developed by Canon to shoot anything. It will shoot everything. If I didn't already have two other bodies I would have hung on to mine as a spare but as it is, it's promised to Cornishboy.

Hope I've helped in some small way.

Enjoy your photography

I wish I had the cash (and could bump off Cornishboy ;)), seriously though I'd need to understand more about this very rare it seems camera before jumping into the unknown that far.

If you're thinking of upgrading and don't use the 60D much at the moment, sell it and stick with the 5D. Then when the time comes you'll have lost less through depreciation and have less to sell so you can just go for it when the time is right.

If you're looking to spend in the region of £1.2K on a body it is worthwhile considering IMHO. The other thing I like about the 1D series is it's ergonomics. While a much bigger camera it fits very well in one's hands either in portrait or landscape orientation. The buttons are all in the right place. If you have concerns let me assure you that 1.3x is hardly anything to worry about and as I said before it produces very clean images. It's Canon's go anywhere, shoot anything DSLR which will be massively successful in 1Dx guise. At £5300 it should be.

I have just put my sigma 17-50 os up for sale, that along with the 60d later will get me to that sort of cash without risking too much.

I have just seen a 1ds mk2 and some shots and it looks good, anything i should know, or am missing?

I'm probably not the right person to respond to this John because I have no experience of the 1Ds2. Since I shoot in available light it wouldn't be a body I would consider. ISO range peaks at 1600 unless you want to push it to the H mark which then offers or should I say yields at 3200. For obvious reasons I only push a camera to a H rating at the very last resort. At 4fps which is barely faster than the 5D2 (3.9fps) it's hardly going to get you that bird in flight shot but it does offer a 16.6MP resolution for capturing still subjects. For the asking price, a pre-loved 5D2 would be a better option with higher resolution, low light capability and better/newer processors.

Again all IMHO naturally

Great advice, thank you - I think in part it was the AF system and higher res than the mk3 that drew me and I'd seen one in the archive that had some wonderful BIF pics at £800!! Granted I'd missed it but still.

No doubt I will, but I suspect that it will come in at, what maybe £2K-£2.5K and I doubt it will impact second hand mkII prices too much.

I do already have the original 5D, which does much of what the mKII does, however moving to the newer model would mean selling the original - so another £5-600 to the budget, plus selling the 17-50 I hope to raise up to £500, the problem is these sales will be my money for the new body as I couldn't really afford to put up much extra cahs, so basically it breaks down to:

"Magic full frame with great IQ\ISO\AF" - sell 17-50, 60D & 5D
"Fast AF\ISO but crop" = sell 17-50 & 60D, keep 5D

I've seen the 5DIII rumours - 22MP, 7.5fps, 63 point AF - but I can't believe the AF too, just too close to knocking out the 7D in all but reach.

I'm reluctant to sell the 60D straight up as its great, especially with the addition of ML for the very accurate focusing in live view, which is why its not actually up for sale at the moment!

From what I've read the 1DIII does look an outstanding camera - I've seen so many BiF shots with it now that are so good - the downsides (apart from not seeing one for sale) - loose a bit of res (but do I really need more than 10MP) and video, but then the pocket IXUS 115HS probably takes care of that pretty well anyway. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh decisions!!!

Well John I had a think about this and asked myself what I would do.

I suppose it depends in your shoes on what I would shoot and how each body would work for me. If I rewind to 2010 and had to answer the same question, I would say that my body of choice would be my 1D3 and it was. I would pick it ahead of the 5D2 on the basis that it will shoot anything. The 5D2 may have one more stop of light, a newer processor and FF but the 1D3 has better AF and more AF points, handles ISO3200 with ease, gets my bird in flight shot. It's whether that extra stop of light may be useful or perhaps you could push it to H ( 6400 ) and print smaller and whether you need the extra width of a wide angle lens. It wasn't that long ago anyway when this was Canon's top of the range DSLR. 10MP still produces great images and some very memorable shots. Folk like you and I could only dream of that not too long ago. The 1D3 would be my personal choice if you didn't need video for which I imagine the Ixus will cope admirably.

Would the alternative of a 5D2 work better for me? Well in portraits obviously but the 1D3 is not backward at doing that either, just that 21MP on a FF is always going to be a lot better. But it won't be easy trying to shoot fast with a 5D2 and the additional AF points of the 1D3 allows you to be quicker off the mark. I wish Canon hadn't gone down the ' specialist body ' route. Their thinking thankfully has changed now of course and this is great for consumers down the line. For now though it's a case of weighing up your options and making your choice. Your little boy is gorgeous BTW. That surely is a consideration too. I still think the 1D3 will handle him very well, especially as he's likely to move around a lot and indeed when he begins to move around a lot faster!!!

Like I said my friend, these are just my personal views. If I have a change of heart I'll be sure to let you know :)

All my best

Cheers again, funnily it was my daughter heading into just the same age my son is now that prompted my buying the 7D back when I did, and I think should I raise the cash and a 1D3 come up again will be the reason I get the 1D3 this time.

As far as portraits go I can see the 5D doing me proud until the 5DII is much cheaper (or I get the upgrade urge again!) - I was even out with it today taking bird shots with the 50-500 - not in flight though as they're just small birds and I didn't have that much time, or light.

LOL Pal

Just a moment ago when I took a picture of my honey bunny asleep ( a cat incidentally ) I did it with a 5D2 and the notion of being able to crop came to mind. Yes you can crop more when shooting at 21MP but 3.9fps still won't freeze fast action. Additionally that one extra stop of low light may be insignificant and if it came to that, simply bolt on a flash. I think overall and because the 1D3 can shoot anything and was designed as such, it probably would be the one I would choose. It's also built like a tank and the battery lasts forever ( approx 2,200 shots per charge ).

3 hrs and 5 minutes since I last posted and my heart is still where it was :D

FPS has nothing to do with freezing action

I know, but i am sure the rest stands, what i think he meant is that a higher shutter speed combine with the fps would ger the shot, or at least thats how i took it

I found the AF on my 5dmkII to be good enough to deal with BIF. Admittedly most of these were vultures so not the smallest (or quickest) birds, however, for my first go I was pretty happy. After all the reading I'd done, I really expected the AF was going to be a pain, which it just wasn't.

The central AF point is used for locking on and then the outer points become active to track the bird.

I have to say, I absolutely adore the sensor as well. It brought my L glass to life (I had a 550d beforehand).

And I bet it's great at Motorsport.

As long as the vehicles are steamrollers

5D2 centre AF point is probably more accurate than the 7D since it has the assist points. I never found the 5D2 lacking for low light or fast action with the centre focus points.

That would explain why the most wished-for upgrade for the 5D MkIII is for it to have an AF system the same as the 7D.

Oh, no. It doesn't.

Ah... I should have updated this really - I've Houston1863's 1D3 arriving tomorrow :)

Thanks all - its not a camera I would have originally considered and from what I've read it looks a perfect companion for my 5D original.

Oh, no. It doesn't.

the outer points are not as accurate and the 5D2 has less cross types but the centre point is very good. I certainly would not want as many focus points taking up the view finder like the 7D.

as well as the centre cross type the 5D has 2 cross type f2.8 assist points plus 4 f5.6 assist points compared to one cross type on the 7D
