Hello all.

I was having a chat with some friends over a beer, and a question was raised.

If all SLR's Digital and film were to be taken away could you do say weddings, sports, aircraft, wildlife photography etc with what would be left to choose from?

What would you choose to continue doing your hobby and the pro's to do your jobs?

FujiFilm HS30 bridge camera with a zoom range (35mm equivalent) of 24-720mm. No interchangeable lens so meets the no SLR rule but handles just like a slightly undersized one and seems to deliver great image quality.

Or a rangefinder like a Leica M8 or M9 for digital and probably an M6 for film.
 
Mirrorless is the future. The time of the SLR/DSLR is coming to an end....

if there were no DSLR's - a bigger bank balance, more shelf space an unused PC and a too many lost memories to think about

but agree - mirrorless is probably the future
 
But +1 for mirrorless....but thats has been said before of course. The next few years will be very interesting as to what direction the big players make
 
Hey...its not fresh meat...in fact I'm not sure what kind of meat it is. I'm not George Soros you know :eek:
 
I could continue with my hobby, I am now solely using an X100 and it does all I need.

However, I don't do weddings, sports or aircraft and only do wildlife when it is 3 feet away from me!
 
Interesting question, probably my X100 would keep me in images.
 
A lot of my sons friends get by perfectly well with their Smartphones.... for holidays and social events and days out. The world of using cameras has passed them by....for now anyway
 
If there were no DSLRs, the mirrorless systems as we know them wouldn't exist. Because what pushes them to get better is the competition. So we'd have compacts that are better then the current ones, perhaps bridge cameras with slightly bigger sensors and shorter zooms - apsc with a fixed 18-85?

And we'd have rangefinders, probably APSC, FF and MF and MF TLR's
 
Given the current popularity for rangefinder style cameras I can see them becoming more and more popular.

Throwback to a previous era or a real alternative to "big" DSLRs I wonder

Interesting view this one....I think that todays phonetographers are tomorrows DSLR users.... I think the creative desire will always be there....and although phones are good, will they ever have the tactile FF body feel?

I think its a game of percentages. Some will get interested in doing more and others will just treat it as a tool. As long as the percentage, however big or small, starts getting camera gear then all will be well.

A bit out of scope for the thread, but I've noticed that my nephews and their friends almost exclusively use their smartphones for photography but there often seems to be a lass (it always seems to be a lass - and not always the same one) in the group with a film (or sometimes digital) SLR.
 
...If DSLR wasn't around I'd most likely not have taken up photography and would have much more money and appear to be a lot less sad lol.

Sometimes I get annoyed that 50% of my thinking is surrounding photography in some way....some days I actually just want to get rid of all my equipment!

...then I take a picture and realise it was a moment of madness :)
 
From what is available now (and ruling out mirrorless systems because they are the obvious and easy answer), I suspect that I would end up with something like the Canon G range and maybe a long-reach bridge camera for the telephoto lens. I'm an amateur/hobbyist on a budget so I'm not going to say a Leica - it'd be like saying I would choose a 1D X now.

I'd still struggle to get a decent shot and I'd still read the forum equipment pages ;)

Interesting. My first camera was a Kodak Instamatic (it's not a DSLR) when I was 10 so if DSLR's had never been I'd still be shooting with something.
 
I would have had more money in my savings account, probably would have got a promotion at work (because my mindspace would have been free for work related thoughts). Sometimes the amount of mind space i dedicte to photography concerns me :(

Instamatic? Anyone can load one of them, just open door, drop cartridge in, close door, wind onto first frame, done! Deliberately designed to be dead simple for the lazy/un-knowledgeable/technically challenged (delete as appropriate) consumer!
 
I got bored of my DSLR a while ago, there is lots of fun to be had with many types of cameras.
 
I got some great photos from a Panasonic FZ50 bridge camera before getting a dslr so I guess I'd go back to that again. It's harder to get the shot because of the EVF and shutter lag, but with practice and anticipation it's very do-able.
 
For film, I'd probably have a better rangefinder camera than the few fixed lens ones I have now.

95% of the time I'm using a CSC for digital now anyhow.
 
If there were no DSLR I probably would have picked up car modding :) so my bank balance wouldn't have changed.
 
Some great replies, a big thanks to all that took the time.

On this subject yesterday i went to the local pitch with my m8 to watch his son play football.

Whilst there we watched one of the dads taking photo's with a Nikon j1 with a 55-200vr attached.

I had to go talk to him, he showed me some of the shots and on the screen they looked very good, he said 10 frames per second coupled with the very fast auto focus of the j1 and the crop factor gave him a 540mm f5.6 and a small compact when using the standard lens it came with.

It kinda looked weird but seemed to be working.
