If you could influence the spec on the D400, if it appears

No
Going on from the what couldnt you live without thread, thought I would asked.

If you had a say in the spec, what would you ask for?

Mine would be an evil love child of D300s/7000.

Taking best bits of both.
Sticking a Canon badge on it is the wrong kind of answer.

D300 body. D7000 feature set, but with 30fps 1080 and 60fps 720. D3200 sensor. D7000 AF, an eyepiece shutter (very useful for long exposures and missing from so many cameras), and probably a CP flash socket. That would be a killer DX camera.

D300 body, D4 af system, 16 - 18mp sensor, no video and the rear AF area selector switch left where it is

Basically just a D300 body with 16 or 20 mp and better ISO than the 7000, maybe on a par with the 700 (or close to)??? The AF is not as good on the 7000 from what i hear so stick with the current one.

I reckon they will stick with the same body/build quality as the present D7000 and D600. Why add the additional expense when the majority will be more than happy with the present setup.

This plus the ability to select auto iso from the control wheel

I would like the D300 size body, with the weather sealing, same controls and fps a little faster so you don't need the extra battery for the faster fps.
Bring in the D7000 sensor and ISO. Sure a few other features I have forgotten about.
Think the 16mp is big enough, just make it a DX D600 but best of both the above DX cameras.
Are you listening Nikon! And while you are at it, can we have it for Xmas at under £1000 :-)

Surely this would just be a D7000 (or replacement of) to all intents and purposes? We had a scenario not long ago where people had a choice of D90 or D300/S. The sensors were basically the same but the number of people who bought a D300 at much greater cost suggests that there is a market for a more rugged body as well as the other advantages the pro bodies bring.

Did the D300/S sell more?

The D90 is still being sold. yet the D300S is, I think, discontinued. Which either means the D90 is a good seller, or that they made loads expecting it to sell, it didn't, and they have loads of stock. ;)

I think if the D300/S was a huge seller, there wouldn't be such a long wait for a replacement.

You may be right, I'm sure Nikon know what they're doing. Subjectively though, the D300 did seem to sell well and the D300S is still listed as a current product. Of course, selling well and making money aren't always the same thing.

The D300S may be listed as current, but I don't think that there is much stock around. I know my local Jessops haven't had one on display for a very long time, but the D90 was there until quite recently. What Jessops put on display is no big indicator of what sells, and what is available, is does show the marketing strategy, as all the Canon DSLRs up to the 7D are on display. It seems Canon may have stock of those camera available to sell. I also think if D300S were plentiful the price would have come down more. As it is the price is staying pretty constant and may even be starting to creep up. Maybe as supply goes down.

As for what a D400 should have, imho of course. ;)

A very similar body and build to the D300S/D800.
Dual card slots. Seeing as the XQD format seems a dead duck, CF and SD slots.
18-24MP.
8-10 frames per second. (maybe 8fps as standard, and 10 with a grip and more powerful batteries.) Whether those last two can be done with the current technology is another thing.
The AF from the D4.
An LCD to match the D800/D4. With any colourcast faults fixed of course. ;)
A video mode to match or improve on the Canon 5DIII/1DX. (I don't use video, but if they don't match or improve on Canon offerings they are dead in the water for Pro's or any serious enthusiast)
ISO to 12k - 25k extendable to 100k

Seeing as it would be the 'Pro' DX camera, it should have a lot of the features of a D4. I don't think it should have a D4 style body, with integrated grip as that would alienate the majority of buyers imho. Those that want that style can buy a grip. Not exactly the same, but close enough for tha minority who want that style.

They've kept people waiting for so long that there may not be a D400/D9000 ever appear. If that were to be the case, I would probably be tempted by what Canon have lined up to replace the 7D. Seeing as that has just had a major firmware update, the shelflife of the current model may have been extended, and a replacement (should there be one ;)) may be quite far off.

Bit weird that both Canon and Nikon seem reluctant to replace their top level crop camera

Seeing as how both were/are such good sellers you would think it would be worth it

Wonder why?

probably an if it aint broke don't fix it approach - 7D is still selling well so why replace it ?

I'm still waiting to upgrade my D200, 16 or 18MP and better high ISO performance is all I need. Plus it would be nice if it still used the same battery as my D200 and D700.

It's never stopped them before, my guess is producing a new high mp sensor with excellent low light capability

Have you not heard all those that rubbish dx now they have gone FF???

I reckon the popularity of FF is increasing so rapidly that perhaps the brands are phasing out their crop range...

I hope not and that the D400 does appear!

Plus it would be nice if it still used the same battery as my D200 and D700.

Well that's not going to happen. :shake: Battery manufacturers in Japan have had to change the materials they make their batteries from, and EN-EL3e
was a casualty, and they've already changed the designs of the newer batteries. ;)

And the D4 (full frame) sensor has what to do with the top of the range DX camera?
