If you had £3000-£3500

Do I smell a deserter amongst the ranks Pete?

Second hand D2x(s) + 28-70/2.8, and 80-200/2.8, leaves enough for an SB600 or 800 and probably a Sigma 10-20mm and some memory cards.

That's a lot of Camera for the money.

Depends on what you want to shoot. If you are into sports, then a used 1D MK2, 17-40 F4, 70-200 F2.8 IS. and what ever flash rocks your boat. You should have a little change left over (for a 50 F1.4).

If into portrature, then I would go for a used Contax 645 AF kit + a film scanner.

When you say very wide, how wide do you mean? 21mm equiv? 17mm equiv? 12 mm equiv?

Not sure Kev. I may buy the new A700 or even the upcoming A900. If I'm going to be investing that kind of cash I would be daft not to consider alternatives.

Too right mate. There's a lot of stuff to like about the A700 but the price ain't one of them and neither is the price of the good glass. Infact it's hard to think of a reason to stick with the A-mount really.

Dou you want full frame or crop? I think that's the first question.

If I had that money I'd be tempted to buy a D300 with grip, 4 SB800s, 4 pocket wizards and if there was enough left a 50mm prime, 70-200mm Sigma and a 300mm 2.8. Not forgettting a bunch of flowers for the wife to soften the blow.

Mostly portraits with the odd landscape. I currently have up to 200mm on a cropped sensor and haven't wished for more reach. I'd like as wide as 10mm on a cropped or the equivalent on a full frame.

I have been with Minolta since I got my 7D nearly 2 years ago, I will be upgrading soon and have to decide whether to stay Minolta or jump ship.

I'd like better high ISO noise so the 5D is tempting, although I must admit seeing this thread
made me realise what is achievable with good glass and a great body even for a beginner.

Unfortunately that adds up to more then £3000 and the sigma 12-24 is not very good on a 5D (I bought and sold it) for what I wanted to use it for (at the 12mm end).

On the other hand a 17-40 would give you that equiv of a 10mm on a crop camera (just about) with a 5D.

Oh and as for the UV filters on the 17-40, I would avoid it if you can, as it causes flair and loss of contrast in many instances (even with the best multicoated filters).

Thanks Jimmy and Alex, two quite similar lists. Alex's list comes to nearly 4,500 and Jimmy's is missing the 24-70 which I think I would miss.

But that gives me a very good idea of what I could get from Canon and how much it would cost, thanks very much for taking the time...

Grand total £3065 ish

leaves a bit for batteries , cards etc.

thats if you decide on Canon. As their are all the others to consider with good kit out at the moment.

Are we also assuming that you don't have a tripod and camera bags etc or are you concentrating solely on body + lenses + flash as per your original post?

Are you wanting pro lenses or will high end consumer lenses do?

Assuming you aren't necessarily going for L glass:

5D Body only £1300 inc cashback
Canon 17-40 L f/4.0 £409 inc CB
Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 EX DG £278
Sigma 70-200 f/2,8 EX DG £630
Canon 580 EXII with free Sto-Fen £315 inc CB

Total £2932 after cashbacks if my maths is correct

leaves plenty for other accessories based on your £3500 max budget.

I've got bag, tripod, monopod, memory.

If I decide to switch I will try to reach for the very best I can afford, when I got into this photography lark I wasn't sure if it would be a passing fad but that's looking pretty unlikely.

I would consider any sensible options however and I am really just getting my head around the options. I love the look of the Nikon D3 for example, but I guess by the time I get some decent glass we'd be talking about more than £5k?

My list came to about 3700 without any cash back reductions, which if you look at mho's post, is a lot of money back :D

You're absolutely right, I threw it in the basket in warehouse express but that would not be the best way to get hold of it. I have a decent flash gun on my Minolta so I would probably go for the 580 rather than the 430.

mho - thanks for giving Kerso's prices, that's very helpful.

edited my first post to give an alternative to all this L glass that's flyiing about...

however I've just seen mho's post giving kersos prices and given the fairly small difference in overall cost I'd go for the canon gear from kerso

Another alternative would be to step back from the FF 5D and go for the 40D and invest more in glass...

Nothing from the Nikon guys yet?

I think in your position, even tho' I'm most definitely in the Canon camp - I'd wait and see what the Nikon D300 & D3 offers too.

Although, that said I think that what the others has suggested is spot on!!

Matt

Hmm let me think about this one!

D300 - £1250
Grip £100~
17-55 Nikkor £750
70-200 Nikkor £1000~
Manfrotto 055ProB + 488RC2 - £170
Mini Trekker AW - £60
memory cards and spare battery.

That comes to around £3500

Then, depending on how much the lenses and body were at the time, Sigma 105 if there was enough cash left.

That's what I'd get.

Oh and as for the UV filters on the 17-40, I would avoid it if you can, as it causes flair ...

A filter that causes flair? Damn ... let me at it!!

I agree, if you not is a rush then see what the D300 has to offer. Plus we've yet to see the pricing or performance of the NEW Nikon 24-70 f2.8. That and the 70-200 f2.8 VR will be a mighty fine pair of lenses and I suspect that you could almost get those and 2 D200s in your budget. If you want the really wide angle then the Sigma 10-20 is hard to beat for £290.

However, whichever system you go Canon or Nikon for you are going to get some nice stuff for £3K - £3.5K. Just when you buy your lenses think about your next purchase it's likely to be FF (unless it's a 5D now ;) ) so as far as possible make them compatible.

Thanks Simon, that's why I'm very tempted to wait until the D3 and the new Minolta/Sony FF before I make up my mind...

Well the D3 is incredible from what i've seen so far, but just the D3 alone is practically the budget mentioned :p

Ah see - that's how I should have phrased my question the other day  (you won't see it - I asked for it to be deleted 2 seconds after I posted it!)

Personally I would buy Nikon, first I would wait for the D300 which will be around £1300 then I would buy the grip for around £200, spare batteries £80, 2x San Disk Extreme 3 2GB cards £45, Nikon SB-800 Flash Gun £250, Nikon 2.8 70-200VR £1090, Nikon 18-200VR (general use) £400.

Tots up to about £3300 and with the spec of the D300 12.3MP, 6FPS (8FPS with battery pack), 920,000 dot 3-inch VGA LCD monitor, Live View with Autofocus , and ISO 200-3200 sensitivity it is a winner... I have one comming from Japan this week also!

Hmmmmmm - interesting question.....

Well, for portraits and landscape, resolution means prizes so:

EOS 5D - £1300
Sigma 12-24 4.5-5.6 - £400
Canon 24-105 4 IS L - £550
Canon 70-200 2.8 IS L- £800 (talk to the Kerso)
Canon 50 1.4 - £230
EX 580 flash - £300
£3,580

nikon d40x
a few decent primes (second hand manual would be fine)

6 months off work doing nothing but taking photos for myself and travelling around the UK in a camper van!

£750 on equipment and the other £4250 on petrol and food lol!

And how are you getting a D300 ( even from japan ) before it's shipping?

I have a friend who works for Nikon, he is the Japan and Euopean sales manager.

Pete have you checked the price of D300s at RGB-Tech? £1099 including VAT. That's only £200 more than the suggested price of the A700 and the whole Nikon system is cheaper and in a better position than the Sony.
