If you had to choose between canon lens which would you choose?

HI All

I have a canon 60D and am looking at some lens but not sure which would be best suited to me. I have a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II & Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Len.

I'd like to build on my collection and am looking at my next lens - I was wondering what people would recommend. I have been looking at the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM and the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM .

I've been wondering which i would get the best images from and which one is best suite to my camera and my needs. I want a general purpose lens that take good images and i want to focus on doing photo's of children and these guys tend to move rather fast so i was thinking the the smaller the F stops the better lens would be for me - or am I totally wrong ... Looking for some advice ... thank you :help:
 
70+ is covered, that leaves 24-70mm. I personally found IS on 24-105 somewhat too weak for my liking to justify it. For comparison 70-200mm f/4 IS allows sharp shots down to 1/20s at 200mm!
 
Of the 2 I'd go for the 24-70. If you're shooting in low light you'll probably need the 2.8. While the 24-70 is a great choice it may not be wide enough on your 60D. Have you considered the 17-55 IS?

Another vote for the 17-55 2.8 IS. It will fit in perfectly with your existing kit.
It's a simply stunning lens on crop bodies. :)
 
I have the efs 17-55 2.8 and it is belter
the other lens to consider for the crop is the efs 15-85mm

IS is pretty much irrelevant considering the subject matter.

The 17-55mm or 24-70 would be the best bet.
 
17-55mm or 24-70

Between these two on my cropped body I'm leaning towards the24-70 due to good all purpose lens ? My thoughts are 17-55 might be to wide for a general purpose lens or am I wrong ? Basically I absolutely love my 70-200 but a bit of a pain and fragile to carry around all the time especially if I want to just sling my camera on and go. Also quality is key for me so I'm now wondering which one is the best of those two from a quality perspective?
 
The 17-55 is perfect for a crop (and so useful with the IS) much like the 24-70 is perfect on full frame. However, everyone's needs are different. I survived with a Tamron 28-75 on my 40D for ages before I went full frame. I didn't shoot wide that much so the focal range was fine. However, now I shoot wider more often so the 24-70L is perfect as my go to lens. YMMV.
 
getting a full frame lens on a crop doesn't make any sense! you are carrying those weight and size for no good reason.

get the 17-55mm, its range is equivalent to 28-88mm on full frame, more useful range than 36-112mm

To you it might not, to others it may make a lot of sense. It depends on intended use.
 
Yet another vote here for the 17-55. I use mine as a general walkabout lens on my 60D, although sometimes I'd like a little more reach at the far end, 24mm isn't wide enough for me.
 
the 15-85 efs is a great lens. I bought one for my son as his walkabout lens.

I had a decision between the 24-70 and the 24-105 and decided on the 24-105 because of the slightly longer range and the 1/3rd less weight of the lens. Perfect as a walkabout, although I do have the 10-22 for the wide angle.

I've hired a 24-70 for a week when my 24-105 went in for repair and I believe I made the right choice with the 24-70. There is an extra 1 stop but the IS easily makes up for this. The 24-70 does allow you to isolate the subject more.

Whichever you choose I don't think you'll be disappointed, but do have a look at the 15-85.

Seriously? What on earth are you on about?

A couple of minor facts:

in terms of size, the 60D, 5DII and 7D are virtually identical.

In terms of weight, the 60D is fractionally lighter (100g), the 7D is heavier.

The 17-55 is a whopping 35g lighter than a 24-105, but is physically bigger.

Making sweeping statements like:

just makes you look like a twit - especially when you come up with frivolous reasons!

more comparable:
Canon 17-55 f2.8 weighs 651g
Canon 24-70 f2.8 weighs 905g

i know which one i'd get if i'm on crop, 17-55 is lighter, has IS and has perfect range of field of view.

Another vote here for the 15-85, smaller than the 24-70 and 17-55, the range is great and the IQ is very good:thumbs:
