If you had to start from scratch would you get a D300s or a 7D

I was just wondering if anyone had to start from scratch, and had the choice between the two, **** one would you get the Canon 7D or the Nikon D300s and why? considering Image quality, Noise, handling, AF and other bits and pieces.

It would depend on how the 7d handles. The review of the 7d in the BJP didn't paint it in a particularly good light and as it was tested by a Nikon-shooter I'd be concerned that I wouldn't be happy with it either. On the other hand someone else coming from a 40d or 50d may love it...

7d all the way. Great stills and the 24p HD video edges it for me

This weeks Amateur Photographer is well worth reading if you're weighing up the two cameras. The 7d seems to have the edge in terms of overall rating (89% vs 87%) and the general text of the review definately favours the 7D.

Seems to be the biggest difference is the way the 7D handles noise and maintains better overall IQ (18mp vs 12mp). Although they didn't exactly say as much, I got the impression that the D300s has the edge on autofocus. It also appears to meter better.

Either way you'll get a top quality camera. Just remember the other bits that make an SLR system - lenses, flash etc etc. In this respect I favour Nikon by a long way (and I've used both extensively).

No surprise there, the 7d is a new camera, the D300s is just a mid-life tweak. When the D400 comes out the tables will no doubt turn in Nikon's favour and then back to Canon when the 8d comes out next week year...

I've used a 7D briefly, and tbh, if all my gear was stolen tomorrow and I had to replace it all, I would be very tempted to go with the 7D, purely for the 1080p non crippled video, because nikon still haven't sorted themselves out about it :@ It was the first canon camera that didn't feel really, really strange to hold, canon's finally realised that nikon's ergonomics are better and pretty much copied them :P

on the other hand, the D400 will doubtless be very sweet, so we'll see...then again, by then, hopefully I'll be looking more at a D4... *ducks*

I haven't heard much good about the 7D so I'd probably go with the D300. However, the amount of lenses available for Canon is really good.

When I got my first DSLR everyone said "get a Canon" so I did, even though my film SLR was a Nikon. Canon arguably had the lead back then but these days I think that generally Nikon have the lead so if I could do it all again or if someone offered to swap all of my Canon gear for Nikon then Nikon would be my choice. Even though they were a bunch of terrorists (according to Ken Rockwell.)

D300s out of the two you have said. But really i would get the stock D300 over the other two as i do not wish to pay more for video.

AP review gave the Canon 89% and the Nikon 87%.
If that is accurate it suggests you can hardly put a cigareete paper between them.

Personally I dont see any point in having video in a DSLR, I had the D300 before and loved it, I gave it away to a friend because i wanted to go full frame but now I cannt justify the extra money as i dont make any money out of my photography. If I could find a D300 for a resonable price, new not 2nd hand, then I would go for it but since every one seems to have the D300s in stock I thought i get some opinions about the 7D before making the purchase. but to be honest I've always been a Nikon man and Love their lenses and the way they handle.

I own a 7d so have a slight bias, but if you look at the specs list the 7d has the better feature list and matches or beats the D300s in most areas.

Realistically they are very close and you will of course receive favourable comments from respective owners. The best bet is to take a trip to Jessops/Jacobs/Dixons and feel them both out to see which suits best. You cannot go wrong with either.

I agree with ^^^

Getting a feel for the things and the way they handle/menus etc would be a great idea. Why not take a CF card and try both cameras out with your own CF card and then review the images on the PC later?

As I said though - the camera is only part of the equation and after a couple of years you'll probably upgrade it. But the lenses etc will last longer (generally), so it might be worth considering each brand as an entire system rather than just a camera body. Nikon don't have quite as many options in terms of lenses but the ones they do have are better than the Canon equivalents imvho.

Currys had stock of the D300 a few weeks ago when most other shops had stopped selling - not sure how much they overstocked, but might be worth asking in store and getting them to do a search on other stores as well. They were selling it for £899.

I will go on friday thank you very much for the tip

That is true. I mainly shoot with primes, the 50mm is my main lens. so in terms of lenses they both offer the lenses I'm after. :)

When the choice of features between the cameras is so close then it is best to try and hold both and try out the user interface.

I don't get on with the Canon user interface, and I'm particularly foxed by the two position on/off button on the XXD bodies. :bonk: I read that is one of the things changed on the 7D though. ;)

Lots of thing should be taken into account when buying a DSLR, quality, cost, lenses, accessories but all those count for nothing if it is uncomfortable and/or hard to use.

My head and hands seem to work with the Nikon way of doing things, so it would be a D300s for me if I had the choice, but I'd try to see if Canon had changed the 7D enough for me to work with, because in some areas it has the edge over the D300s.
