and failed because it was already taken don't give up!

I first tried to get myname.co.uk in 2003, it was taken then, and I just assumed that was it forever. Last night for some bizarre reason I put it in a domain reg site, and it was available! And quickly bought it.

I suppose i should have checked back in 2003, whether it was an actual site or a holding name (web ignorant then). I'll never get .com though, as that's a well established south London estate agent.
 
I must of tried about 100 names for a domain, 90 were holding pages, 9 were actual sites and 1 was available.

Buying domains purely to sell them on shouldn't be allowed, but that's the problem with having no one in charge of the internet.
 
You cant buy a domain name. you can only rent it...Nobody can buy one not even microsoft.. therefore sometimes when not renewed the domains become available... You can check the whois on a domain and it will tell you when its up for renewel .. some sites offer an automated service so it renews the name as soon as available..

Someone is in control of domain names.... The UK TLD is a non profit organisation and will sort out disputes.. Other TLDs do have systems in place where you can dispute a name.. but it can take a while.

there are rules about buying and selling domains...

BTW one of my claims to fame was to make the worlds first ever free multiple domain checker that updates on screen.. Original made in perl/cgi but a template now used by many domain registers to this date.. converted to php ect. I made it while working for a comnpany that placed it online for free.. so no fortune to be made :(

I was lucky to get mine as a .com, but my name is not that common. I was very happy to register it as it now redirects to my facebook page where I display some of my photos.
