I got up at 7am, packed my photography bag, went a walk down to the sea front to get some good shots before the tourists arrived. Took my camera out, fitted the lens hood, checked the display and what did I see - THE BIG E. I think I had better order some spare cards and keep one in each of my bags.:bang::bang:

Yep.... done that before now I have spare cards in the glove box in my car.

My confession of stupidity from yesterday.

Here...you are not alone.....:)

Glad to know I'm not the only one. Cards in glove box very good idea, but wouldn't have helped me this morning as I was walking.

Another idiotic thing this morning. Went to greenhouse to check my seedlings, a big snail was sitting in the middle of them with a juicy one in his mouth. I threw him across the patio in a temper (I dont believe in slug pellets or I could have shot him) and killed him stone dead. Another photo opportunity ruined.:bonk:

My solution is part of my kit is a memory card holder and a couple of batteries. If I take my camera out, these go out too. Sure, I always have one in the camera (Well, mostly... I too got caught out once) but knowing I always pick up the spares is added insurance.

Unfortunately "part of my kit" was in my other camera bag.

classic, yep done this before, with my battery though, keep spare cards and batteries in my bag now

It's actually less of a problem if you have a lot of kit to carry:
2 cards in each camera - removed, images downloaded, replaced in cameras and re-formatted as part of workflow - kit doesn't go back into bags until it's been cleaned and checked.

Main bag:
2x D3 bodies
lenses: 17-35; 24-70; 70-200
2x SB900 flash
SU-800 commander unit
12 spare cards
4 spare EN-EL4a batteries
Cleaning-kit (if not in ancillaries bag)

Ancillaries bag (only on overnight jobs):
D3x Body (if not used for main task)
Lenses: 14-24mm f/2.8; 50mm f/1.4; 85mm f/1.4; 105mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor (if not used on main task)
4 spare EN-EL4a batteries
Battery-Charger(s) and leads
flash-remote lead
electronic cable-release
Spare flashguns: SB900; SB800 & SB80DX
2x Pocket-Wizards
12 fully-charged AA batteries
12 disposable AA batteries
Cleaning-Kit
1x Spare t-shirt, underwear and socks shrink-wrapped in poly-bag
toothbrush
disposable-razor

Prior to a job, all kit is laid-out on the floor and packed according to a packing-list I made up years ago and amended as new kit was added/removed.
That way nothing gets missed.

And a roadie to carry it.:D Seriously though I do admire your organisation.

A spare card in your pocket is always a comfort.

You can tell I've been where you've been.

It's work...

When I go out for no reason, it's just a Nikon F3 film-camera (now that I've found one on ebay that does work!), a 35mm lens and 1 spare roll of B&W film...

Think we have all been there. Reading this makes me feel better about the time I take checking things before I can leave the house.

At least you were shooting digital and got the error message. I once went out on a walk round Malham Cove with my Minolta Dynax 7 loaded with some nice grainy Ilford 3200. Took about 20 photos over the course of 5 miles or so, then checked to see how many shots I had remaining only to realise at that point that I had no film in the camera :bang:

At least I had some film with me so was able to start shooting from that point onwards, but I didn't fancy retracing the last few miles!

Me too - been there; done that, just a couple of months ago.

1. Get up early.
2. Drive to the location (1 hour).
3. Climb the crag (1000' straight up).
4. Realise the freshly charged battery is back home, still in the charger.
5. Climb back down.
6. Drive home.
7. Buy extra battery.

A learning experience or a senior moment ? - you decide.

Mike

Did the battery thing, because I decided to change bags because of going on the bike instead of in the car...so changed bodies as it was easier....yep, battery was in the charger. Drove from here to Southampton, caught ferry to Cowes! next morning, in the photo boat, got camera out prior to shoot.......:nuts::nuts:

Got phone out, emergency call home. Anna despatched in car to drive to Southampton with battery (cheaper than a new one from LCE in SOTON - tried that route first).

Never left home without checking the checked kit first - just open the bag and check battery, cards, lenses, flashes. Takes 30 seconds.:cuckoo: So why don't we do it (well, I do now.:D)

Decided now that I need a spare battery for every camera plus spare battery in every bag.
Ditto for SD cards.
Only problem is I'll probably forget to put the camera in the case. Oh dear where did my memory go to.

Why don't people just always keep a card and a charged battery IN the camera at all times, then short of leaving without a lens, you'll always be ok to a point?

i have 4 memory cards and 3 batterys..... camera/2 lenses - tomorow when i got on my expedition i will take my tripod too but that above is what i always carry..! :)

and my other lens is in my car. oops.

oh and mike - im sorry.... but that is really funny :D

Whilst waiting for Canon to release spare LP-E6 batteries, I went on holiday...and then had to have the charger express mailed out to Greece!!!!

Have two of everything now!! lol

Don't worry I did it on Saturday at the airport, thought I'd put a fresh card in the 5d2. I had a 4gb one. No probs you say.

21mb files on a 4gb card soon slurps it up. I thought I'd put an 8gb in ddoooohhhhh :D

same thing happened to me the other day :bang::bang::bang:
gotta carry around my big camera bag and my card was in my laptop at home :bang:

I have got into the habit of taking a couple of shots before I leave.
Checks the camera, card & battery.
I did go birdwatching the other day and forgot my scope though :bonk:

I had to pick my son up form uni. Thought I'd take the opportunity to take some photos in the New Forest on my way. Packed everything (or so I thought) drove for over 2hrs, saw a rather nice shooting opportunity, parked. Grabbed my camera bag and found a good vantage point. Thought about settings, lighting etc. Framed the shot nicely...pressed the button...NO MEMORY CARD!!! Aghhhhhhh
As a newbie I had to take this as all part of the learning curve...doh
