OK please help me!

I am looking to build an off camera flash bracket, can get the l brackets from anywhere, but the thread in the bottom of my camera is confusing the bejesus out of me. So I don't know what screws to get.

YES, I have Googled it, over and over but it is making it worse.

It's either 1/4" 20 UNC, 1/4" 20 Whitworth (both of them are different, USA and England I think), or something totally different.

Not only that but I can't find anywhere that sells them :bang:

Please help me!

Whilst UNC and Whitworth are technically different threads, they're so close at 1/4" as to be indistinguishable.
 
1/4 Whit is not a common size for DIY etc, won't find it in those kind of shops.

It is however still used a lot, despite it being 100 years old. The thread and pitch is particularly good for screwing things together by hand and you'll find it used for fishing and shooting accessories, and some household stuff like brooms and dusters. I've pinched a few nuts and bolts from all those things :)
 
Cheers guy, I got worried for a bit because I read that if you use the Whit it is slightly different and could damage the hole in the camera.

I'll pop around places at the weekend and ask.

Typo? It's 1/4 Whit you need.

Been there and done that around local DIY shops, and met with blank stares. Unless you can rob a few bits off a duster handle or something, you won't find any 1/4 Whit nuts and bolts for sale (only metric).

Have you got a local scrapyard with older cars in?

For some reason, all battery terminals were 1/4 whit long after the world went metric (right into the 80's).
 
Could you look for a spare tripod mounting plate, take the screw out and use that?

This - it's the TPI (threads per inch) that matters. The major and minor diameter of the threads will be almost the same. But if the TPI or pitch differ then the thread will strip.

Whitworth and UNC are the same TPI up to and including 7/16"
 
I was going to ask how long a screw you wanted, but then found that I have only one size, 25mm.

If that size is suitable, then pm your address I will put two in the post today.

I have checked, and they fit perfectly in my camera baseplate.

Thread angle is different between the two.


Bsw is 55 degree
Unc is 60 degree

But for what you want either will do the job
