Hi

I suddenly noticed that there was no icon on the desktop for the main hard drive. I can't figure out how to get one and wondered if anyone knows.

Also when I check the hard drive in system preferences there is a ? over it, any idea why

Finder -> Preferences... -> General -> "Show these items on the desktop:"

thanks adrian. I can't quite follow though. Is that system preferences, I can's see the general tab?

any idea why the hard drive icon in system preferences has a question mark over it

it's questioning which start-up disk you want to use. I'm guessing that if you re-installed your OS, then you booted from the CD drive. Choose your main HD (where you installed your OS to) as your start-up disk in the preferences and the question mark should go.

struggling to find the location to select start up disc

although I reckon it is selected as the start up disc

System preferences -> Startup disk

Actually selecting the hard drive as your startup disk rather than letting it guess can also speed your boot time up, as it won't even bother looking to the optical drive or network before polling the hard drive for an operating system.

If you need to boot from a CD/DVD in future press and hold the C key when the computer turns on with the disc in the drive.

thanks. It is selected as the boot up disc. Maybe the ? is for something else

If you are referring to the icon for Startup Disk in the System section of System Preferences then it will have a question mark on the disk icon.

I can't see any other hard drive icons in System Preferences so if this isn't it I don't know which icon you're looking at.

Thats the one Kasalic. Do you know why it has a ? mark on it?

Yup - it's not a representation of YOUR hard drive, it's simply an icon showing that this is where you can select which startup disk you wish to use, and as such it should be the same on all Macs unless you are running with a set of custom icons

The question mark is simply denoting that you have a choice of which drive to use.
