Imac crashing problem

My iMac keeps crashing, particularly when doing tasks that involve lots of writing data to the hard drive.

Using disk utility, I did a repair disk on the hard drive and got some errors which it seemed to repair ok, however when I tried a repair permissions I get errors which are not fixed.

Is there anything I can do or is it likely to be the hard drive on it's way out and needs replacing?

That doesn't look like HD corruption. It's software corruption as software is being set to the wrong user. If it were HD failure I'd expect to see read or write errors and re-tries.

I'd google the errors and see if there are patches or updates available that will sort it out.

Thanks for that

When I google it the popular wisdom seems to be that the errors can be ignored. I wonder if that means my crashing is down to something else.

Is there a diagnostic tool that can be run to see what causes the crash?

I agree with you that the reported errors you are getting may not be important. I get similar when I run Disk utility.

You say the iMac crashes. can you describe what happens. Do you gets a slow grey veil coming over the screen and a request to reboot. If so this may be a Kernal Panic. It's possibly a problem with a piece of hardware.

I'd disconnect any peripherals you have and see if you get the same problem. If all is well then add each item in turn and see if that identifies the culprit. If you still get the problem with the Mac unattached then you may be right in that it's a hard drive problem. A utility such as Drive Genius may be needed to investigate this.

If you have Apple Care then a visit to an Apple shop and let them have a look may be in order.

No Apple care I'm afraid, I bought the imac 2nd hand on this forum a while ago.

What happens is always the same, one of the programs, usually Lightroom but today it was Parallels freezes with the spinning ball. The other programs continue to function for a while but ALT CMD ESC does nothing and there is no way to close the frozen program down. after a few minutes the whole thing freezes and I have to turn it off.

It tends to happen when I am doing lots of thing at the same time, syncing my ipad while exporting a few images on LR, for example.

Hardware wise I have a Canon printer/scanner, a USB HUB a couple of external hard drives and a Huey Pro. Apart from the Huey they have all been connected as long as I have the Mac, more or less and the crashing preceded the Huey.
 
Sounds like it could be a resource shortage issue. If you try and do too much at once with inadequate memory in particular then this can happen. Have you got any stats monitors running?

If something freezes with the spinning wheel you should still be able to click on the background and get back to finder and try and close the locked application. Sometimes it take a few goes to make it do it.
 
Very similar experience with a 2008 20" iMac.

Like you, thought it might be a disk issue. Used install CD disk utility to clean up disk permissions; but 'lock up' continued.

Traced to insufficient RAM. Showed up in Activity Monitor with vast virtual memory (VM) being used. So slow with spinning ball forever.

Resolved by purchasing 2GB additional RAM from Crucial for £36 inc VAT and delivery. Now runs many more windows and applications at the same time without the system slowing. Sweet.

BTW 2008 iMacs were often shipped with 1GB RAM. This really is insufficient for photo processing apps, especially if you are playing with other apps at the same time.

I have 4GB of RAM, should that not be enough?

I have just been exporting photos from LR to Facebook while syncing an ipod touch and it was fine, so the problem seems a bit sporadic.

If the problem is sporadic it could be a real pain to find. As you know the spinning beach ball happens when the computer is waiting for something to happen, with me it when the external drives have spun down and are spooling up again. This is only for 5-10 secs though.

I wonder if it is something similar? Could it b an external drive not coming on line for some reason. The power is on and the connection made but for some reason the disk isn't being read.

I'm not a great fan of hubs, although they are a necessary evil. Can I suggest you try disconnecting each peripheral in turn and run for a length of time that would normaly cause the problem. Try and eliminate each one in turn.

You might also to switch memory modules round and see if this makes the problem better or worse. It's possible that it may be linked to memory and only when stretched does it show up.Sometimes though just reseating them clears up a problem .

I've a MBP that runs with 4 Gb of memory and is happy running Lightroom and Photoshop, so I would have thought 4Gb on the iMac should be fine
 
It might help find which programme is resource hogging. I use istat menu which sits on the top most bar with a display of free memory and cpu usage. It also gives me fan speed and system temp.

Some programs suck up spare memory so even with 4GB you can find that one of them might have thieved it all. Some are also better than others at letting go of memory. Some just hang onto it when they're not even using it. Firefox is a memory sucker. It will just get bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger so you have to restart it every so often.

4GB is good for an iMac, but much depends on the number of responsive (ie user interface tasks such as working in email or a web browser, or photo editing) and batch (eg running a long export or search for duplicates) processes you have running at the same time.

You can find out how much you are using in OS X at any time by launching Activity Monitor (type Activity in Spotlight. Click on Activity Monitor when Spotlight locates it). Notice the tabs at the bottom for CPU, System Memory, Disk Activity, Disk Usage and Network. On System Memory, it is good to have some blue (inactive) showing, in case it is needed. You also need at least 20% of the disk free for the OS to use for virtual memory - preferably more.

More than that: close applications and windows that you are not using! And if you have a batch process running in the background, make sure you don't try to hog the foreground by using the machine for heavy work. That would be loading the machine too much.

Sill haven't got to the bottom of this, I have just had it crash twice while importing some photos via FireWire, loads of memory free.

I have disconnected the USB hub and most of the devices and am trying again...
 
Pete, i dont run an iMac now but had exactly the same problem, i dont like the wireless keyboards and mice so used wired versions, this along with other USB gadgets meant i needed a hub, turns out the problem only occured when reading or writing to an external drive which was connected through a USB hub, tried a different hub but still the same, ALL was ok with the external hard drive plugged in directly to a USB socket but came back when it went through the hub.

Eventually got rid of the hub and everything great, just dont have enough USB ports
 
Thanks Gary, running it without the hub now so I guess I'll find out.

I now have a wireless keyboard and mouse so I don't need as many USB ports but it is so much easier to have a hub and everything plugged in all the time rather than messing around switching devices...

I guess this is a notch off my Apple fanboyness.
 
As folk have pointed out there are a number of things that can cause this type of problem.

Following a period of locking up have you tried looking at the console logs to see if it gives an idea of any software of hardware having problems? It's under Applications, Utilities, Console.

Is a little suspicious. Could be as a result of a software issue shortly before it or a drive issue. IT loads Firewire and USB devices just before. Do you have any external drives attached to either of these?
 
As you now have a larger external drive for TM, I'd initialise the old one, install an os, then install the software on it you were using when you suffered crashes. Running from this external drive would at least prove if the problem related to the iMac or the internal drive/system. BTW, I have seen no end of WD 320GB hard drives fail in aluminium iMacs.

Exactly.

I use SuperDuper once a week on my MBP. If I ever have problems I can just run off the clone for a while as a check. Might be worth setting up your old USB drive for this purpose. It will also allow you to clone the temporary drive back to your internal one if you find that an installation to the external one works fine.

I would do as above and try running a cloned drive for a couple of days, it will be a bit slow and tedious via USB but it will prove it. I'd say run a new install but that could be a software issue you see. Let us know how you get on and we can move on from there.

Sudden thought. I had an external drive that used to hang my mac altogether. It was because it was a PC formatted one rather than a mac one. FAT32 can't deal with long filenames and has a limit on files in a directory. If the drive isn't formatted as a mac volume then it can be well ropey if certain types of filename are encountered. I re-formatted it to mac and linux partitions and it never played up again.

Good idea but I always Mac format.

It has been a couple of days with no crashes, I left it going last night with lightroom publishing three collections at once whilst handbrake ripped a DVD to see if I could stress it and it was fine, so it looks like the USB hub was the culprit.

Has anybody found a solution to the hub problem, other thank not using it?

The hub I have is a Belkin 2-in-1
 
I've got a Belkin 7 port powered hub that acts as mainly a printer hub. ( although it does have one hard drive connected for Time Machine). Not had any hangs but as you can imagine it's not overtaxed. All important drives are either directly connected to the Mac's USB ports or are Firewire.

Are you using the plug in "Travel Port" option. I wonder if there is enough power going to those ports.

Yes I am using all the ports but I have got the HUB externally powered. Maybe I should try it with only the 4 ports rather than all of them?
 
How full is your hard drive, just a thought as OSX likes a few gb free.
If you have more than approx 10gb free then there are a few more things you can do.

I have a printer/scanner, A Huey color pro, a MIDI keyboard, a memory card reader, a ipod/ipad, an external HD, another external HD (for time machine) and before I got a wireless keyboard and mouse I had those in the USB too.

Holy crikes, my iMac is currently using, (looks behind machine), 0 USBs!! :)
 
I've always tended to use powered as some devices can be quite power hungry and USB can only supply so much current.
