Imac crashing problem

When you say it crashes, can you say more? Does it recover from the crash or does it require you to hold down the power button?? Its either like you said a USB problem, or it might be a stress issue. Have you tried syncing the iPad with everything closed??

Unfortunately it's all very sporadic, the crashing leaves a spinning ball, I can switch applications but do nothing with them. The clock also stops completely and I have to hold down the power button.

It is definately happening less often without the USB hub connected and the ipad usually syncs fine, with other things running or not.

Aww man! Just get a new machine

I was thinking of possibly something CPU related? Have you got iStat widget installed? Any temps or stress level readings you can share? Fan speeds etc.

Not that I can see

the above stats, are from after it crashed and was rebooted, I had mail and LR3 running as well as syncing my ipad.

It seems to be happening a lot when I'm syncing my ipad at the moment.

It did sync ok after the reboot with nothing else running.

Any other ideas?

Only things connected are a USB drive and the printer

Hmmm, I wonder if it's a problem with the fan, I had that with an old Sony vaio that was a similar machine, with the workings behind the screen, the fan was all clogged up and it overheated and crashed a lot. I wonder where the fan is?

My optical drive fan idles at 1000. I think your temps are in F you know!?

Intel CPUs have that Safe whatever technology where they throttle when they get hot. Are you in C/F??

You wont get to the fans and they don't get that dusty

To get to the fans you have to remove the glass, then the aluminium front then the screen inside too.

Ok, well in that case, tell me what software you are using, I will check my voltages, if yours are significantly lower it means your CPU is throttling to prevent itself from melting.

Looks like I have found the problem - Microsoft sync

Every time I have a problem this process is running.

I no longer even use entourage and can not stop this bloody process running!

Isn't Microsoft Sync used to sync the iPhone/iPad? :shrug:

EDIT: A bit of quick Googling threw up THIS as a solution that has worked for some with the same problem.

Thanks Simon you are right Microsost sync seems to run when syncing the ipad. It also sync Entourage (yuk) that I don't use with ical.

I am reinstalling Entourage in order to stop ical syncing to it even though it is not installed :thinking:

I can't believe that apple are using microsoft software to sync a Mac with an ipad!

I wonder if you ever resolved this problem. I was having the same problem when using Time Machine to back up to my Time Capsule (MBP freezes with the spinning wheel and the only fix is to force restart, as the force quit window won't open).

I actually found this thread simply by Googling the error

I' not sure I ever got to the bottom of this as I got a new MBP so used that a lot more. I have continued to have problems with the iMac and it overheating though so I think it is all related.
