Here's the same image with some dramatic levels adjustments applied to bring the marks out

They look like dirty smudges. Naturally they are not.
I've done a little bit (a very little bit) of googling and it seems it could be from components overheating.....

It's a early 08 model 24" iMac 2.8 Core2Duo (Purchased late 08) with my own memory added.
I have 3 years Applecare purchased afterwards.....
What is my course of action and what (if anyone has any experience) will Apple do about it?

Use your Applecare That's what its for, it is a known fault more recently with the new 27" iMacs

What would I do?

Make an appointment at the Genius Bar at the Trafford Centre Apple Store and take the machine in to demo the issue (late evening appointments are usually pretty quiet and relaxed).

I've always been dealt with courteously, and any warranty work that's needed to be done has always been 'above and beyond'.

You bought AppleCare, make it work for you now.

Cheers, I'll give AppleCare a call, or should I just back it up and book it into a Genius Bar appt?

You can call AppleCare and they'll tell you where to take it. Which is not necessarily where you want to take it. And this step is redundant and a waste of time.

Just take it in to your preferred Apple service centre. I wouldn't bother booking a Genius slot either. Another waste of time and a redundant step.

Do an online check of AppleCare warranty and print the page to take along with you.

I thought you couldn't go and get it looked at without a Genius appointment?
Are apple retail stores service centres?

Yours, confused of Manchester

Having had four repairs (different things, different reasons) successfully taken care of at Apple Trafford Centre, I strongly recommend making a Genius Bar appointment, you'll be given a time, and to within a minute or two, you will be seen at that time, they then go through your Apple repair issue until a resolution can be made, without rushing. All of my repairs were carried out on site, and I was able to speak to the tech that carried out the repairs personally when they phoned me to tell me my machine(s) had been fixed.

One of the reasons that I keep buying Apple machines, is not that they never go wrong, but that they make it right when they have gone wrong.

Well I've got a Genius appointment on Thursday evening.

So tomorrow will be spent imaging the HD, reinstalling OSX etc.....

My mac suffered from this and you will most likely find it is just dust on the inside of the screen.

It is easy to solve all you need is a window suck to stick on the screen and pull, the magnets will release the front screen and you will be able to remove it and clean the inside and then just line it back up and put back in place, the magnets will seat it back and hold it fast again.

It is just a cosmetic screen and the real panel is beneath it.

lol, I know you are being deadly serious Nigel but that made me laugh as I can't imagine anyone trying to "suck" their screen off!  I'm getting such a comical image in my head of someone doing that! lol

Does that seriously work?!!

Mine looked like dust as well but it wasn't. And yes, Graham, you do suck the screen front off. Although, for those not so well endowed with Nigel's pucker, the use of some wide sticky tape works just as well.

Ooooh I didn't know it was so easily pulloffable.
However, I'd rather make the most of my applecare now, just incase it isn't dust. The mac's getting on a bit now...

Well I took it in for the Genius bar, staff member Jason at the Trafford Centre, so if you ever see him say hi, he's a thoroughly thoroughly helpfully nice chap.

I explained, showed him the problem, showed him the photos from this thread and he agreed it wasn't right.
He asked me if I was a smoker, or did anyone smoke near it, I said no (no one smokes in this house).

He said it could just be dust, or it could be something else. I mentioned burn marks and he said unlikely.
He has however, ordered a new screen and new panel for me, and will ring me when it's in. As they are 'full up' I get to bring my mac home until they ring (early next week he thinks).

I also have the choice of either taking it in to the trafford centre within 5 days of them ringing, or because I have AppleCare, ringing them up and getting them to do it by courier, for free :D
Still deciding which one to go for...May just take it to Trafford myself rather than trust a faceless courier and repair centre.

Well they phoned today. If I take it in before 12 tomorrow, theyre hoping for same day turnaround. Result :D

If it's not too much hassle or distance then I'd definitely opt for taking it in myself rather than trusting a courier. Even if it's well packaged, shock impacts from being tossed about could cause components inside to become loose and fail later on.

But then I'm not very trusting :)

I am doing. Dropping it off in a bit :)

I can't speak for any other Apple Store, but the guys that look after you on the Genius bar at the Trafford Centre *really* go the extra mile....

At the risk of repeating myself, they're the reason I'm still buying Apple computers.

I'm pleased you got the outcome you wanted Marcel :)

Regards,

Have to say although I live down south son lives in Manchester & we have always found the Traford Centre Apple Store really helpful & have bought a number of machines & bits from them. They have a guy in there big like me who is a really good photographer & so helpful

Well I dropped it off shortly after 10am, and got a phone call about 3pmish to say it's ready.

Looking much better!
