Imac + Macbook or Imac + Ipad??

Well, for those of you who have lived with the iPad really, as I have not, only played with one in the shop. When I first started photography, I was using a 2008 MacBook White, which I still have. It's in very good condition, but as my photography got more serious and I started to sell portraits etc, I bought a 21.5 inch Imac which I love and am posting on now. WHat's troubling me is, do I offload the macbook which now only really gets used for browsing the web whilst on the couch in the evening and buy an Ipad, either 1 or 2, for web browsing, and showing people photos etc etc.

Just after some opinions really, think I have given all the relevant info!
 
Thanks. Yeah I know it does more, that's a given. But I don't really use it for what it can do now I have the iMac. I liked having it when I travelled to Australia as I was uploading photos to it as I took them and even editing a few, but now, editing on a 13 inch screen is no fun after the iMac. Just wondering what the brosing and typing experience is like with living with the iPad, not playing in the shop.

And you can send me your MBP if it's getting dusty!
 
I suspect you will need an additional app to display individual groups of images. The iPad tends to use iPhoto style filing, i.e events, etc.. Plus I'm not over enamoured with the display options. I use an app called Portfolio, which enables you to put images into separate galleries. I'd also wait for the iPad-2 it's faster processor will help with larger files. However it does help if you resize the images so they are just the right size for the iPad.

It also works fine as a portable backup. Remember though it will only support SD cards via the camera connection kit. Cameras with other cards need to be downloaded using a suitable USB cable. CF card readers don't work any more since iOS 4.0

Thanks. Yes I will be waiting for the iPad 2 whichever route I go down. Well aware of functionality and the scrolling galleries don't bother me as long as you set them up right, much like on the iPhone right? I have just taken all the data off my MacBook tonight and onto external HD and set the imac to backup via Time Machine to Time Capsule (which I used to use for the MacBook) Who knew data moving was so stressful!

Any more opinions welcome, these decisions can be expensive!

I was using a dual core MBP as my main machine, but I've recently got an iMac and iPad as I don't really need the full functionality of MAC OS in a portable form. The improved performance and bigger screen of the iMac are the main reasons why I got it. The iPad is ideal for my computing needs on the go. So, the MBP is going to be sold very soon.

If you don't require the portability of your MB and you're not using it anyway then why keep it?
 
My opinion is the iPad is just a great device for net on the go and playing with apps. it won't be productive like a MBP but if your just using it for checking mail and browsing then the iPad is great.
 
Thanks for the responses. My MacBook stopped being productive when I got the iMac really. Now it just gets used for browsing the web and....er......taking to peoples homes to show photos and that's about it. I think I have decided so it's just having a factory reset at the moment. I hope I got all the data I needed off it! Erk!
 
I'm wondering about this too as I'd love an ipad, partly to show people/clients photos. The macbook gives the option to shoot tethered which would be useful for some photo shoots though. I wonder whether a cheap non-apple laptop + an ipad would be an option.
 
I use a 27" iMac and 11" Macbook Air which I think is a great combination. Was planning on iMac + iPad but when it came to buying the iPad I decided the Air would suit me better as I need to use Office whilst away from home and decided it'd be nice to be able to use Lightroom. I still think I'll be getting an iPad soon though as I want one for casual browsing etc, they each do their particular jobs so well I think I'm just going to have to have all three!

I prioritised the Macbook Air over the iPad for the keyboard and OSX, but if youre only using tour Macbook for things you could do on an iPad I'd swap - my laptop is now all about protability. If you want to keep some of the advantages of a laptop and have the portability of the iPad the 11" Air is a good option IMO.

I was firmly in the iMac and MacBook (air) camp, but with Photosmith for Lightroom soon to be available for the iPad I think I could be swayed...

iMac and Macbook (pro or air) hands down.
Ipad is very limited compared to a macbook pro or air.
Go for the pro over the plastic macbook as it lasts so much longer and is recently updated.
Or the air over the pro if you want portability - they still are pretty fast.
I'd get a 27" imac as 22" you'll grow out of quickly when using for photo editing.
include Aperture and a nice external Hd for backup :)
 
Have an MBP connected to a 27" monitor. That is my main computer and I do take it around with me a lot, but if I just want to browse the internet, chat to someone, or even write a bit it is the iPad every time.
