New to Macs so a bit lost when it comes to memory  I currently have 4gb and was thinking of upgrading and sticking 2 x4gb to bring the memory up to 12gb will this help the mac run a bit faster ?

Thanks Craig

not sure if im right but i was told the imac are only capable of running 8GB maximum .. if you upgrade to upto 16 it wont use the extra 8

As siad, I think two 4gb sticks owuld get you 8gb, I could be wrong but Imacs only have 2 slots (atleast mine does)

if thats the case however, its easy enough to do

mine has 4 slots its the new 21'' and i have 4 x 2GB .. i was told that i couldnt run 4 x 4GB as the computer wouldnt be able to use 16gb worth

I know i can support up to 16gb of ram so 12gb will be ok but just wanted to know what sort of performance increase i will get from having 12gb over 4gb

That all depends upon what you are trying to do with it.

How many memory slots do you have. I'd be surprised if it is more than two. So fitting an additional 2x4gb on top of what you already have is going to be somewhat problematic ;)

I have 4 slots

Will be editing photos web stuff may be playing a few games

The latest iMac have 4 slots, total 16GB. ..:D

does anyone know if the 21'' version is capable of running 4x4gb sticks?

if so ill sell my 4x2gb to someone who wants to bump to 8GB lol

anyone whos interested ill flog them 4 x 2GB of DDR3 RAM - the new version for new imac for £65 posted?

I don't have a mac, but I do have an i7-2600k with 16Gbytes. I previously had a dual core E8400 with 4G and then 8G in. I monitor my memory usage with a windows gadget. The move from 4-8G was significant - especially if you're doing anything intensive and have a few programs open (I can have 50+ windows open when I'm running "normally"). I haven't rtried without 16G in the machine, but I haven't noticed (in the last 3 weeks of use since I built it) using more than about 7Gbytes.

It may vary with Macs, but I'd expect the performance boost to come from 8G-16G to be minimal.

yeah mine uses nowhere near enough ram to use 8GB so its apointless for me and therefore i wont do it lol
