Yes
Is there a great performance difference between a High end monitor (E.g NEC, Dell ultrasharp, etc) and the screen of a Imac 27'' once calibrated? In practical terms.
I am only interested in colours and blacks.

I have looked around for the screen spec for the imac but had no joy. And the reviews i have read on it are a bit sketchy.

I would really appreciate some advice.

thanks in advance

I use 24” imacs at uni and have a 24” dell ultrasharp at home. With the mac the colours and density of the blacks changes as you move from left to right. The ultrasharp does not do this the colours and blacks appear totally consistent over much greater viewing angles.

IMO the dell is much better.

The best price I found and the place I got mine was

£434.75 including the onsite 3 year warrantee

If you already have a PC then go with the monitor :)

if not then the iMac is a good choice, not sure about screen calibration software though.

personally i find any glossy screen a nightmare to work on even in the middle of the office away from any windows.

im pretty sure that most pro screens are matte, the imac is glossy. read into that what you want.

no doubt i'll get a flaming for that lol

Everyone knows that Apple hardware is better than anything else, which is why it costs 83489758973405893459 times more ;)

Glossy screen sucks hard, dude, in fact, the non glossy version (anti glare) of Apple's monitor (not sure whether they got it on imac) cost more.

Thanks ah5168. has anyone else had experience using both?

Yes the gloss is a pain. my mbp has one and it kills the viewing experience.

Just to clarify i am in the market for a Desktop and the key factor of any choice i make is the Screen. hence the question on the performance difference of an Imac screen and other high end monitors.

You can tell a lot about a product by the warrantee, the Dell monitor 3 years and they will send you a new monitor overnight FOC if it develops a fault. Mac screen 12 months take back to the shop warrantee, you will also be without the base unit, DVD drive webcam etc. it will be returned after a week with no guarantee that you data will be intact.
