iMac - Photoshop CS4 and Scratchdisk

Grateful for your advice. I am coming to terms with having a nice shiny box that is not really user upgradable. CS prefers to have a physically separate drive as the scratch disk - this is obviously not possible with an iMac unless an external disk. Is USB is worth the expense just for this?

How do you do it? Just not bother?

I don't use photoshop but would recommend a large USB or Firewire drive that could be used as external storage (for photoshop) as well as a backup drive (using time machine).

Thanks, I have a NAS for file storage for the network and a USB drive for the Time Machine. The NAS is slow, at least as drives go its slow. The TM drive I want to keep dedicated. Just wondered if anyone had tried using USB drive solely as scratch.

The reduction in speed would cancel out any increase you would get from having the scratch drive separate. About the best you could manage is a separate partition just as scratch (not as quick as its own drive but better than nothing).
 
Cowasaki. I kind of thought this - I was also considering backing up my existing USB drive to try it out. I think that you have talked me out of wasting my time. It does seem pointless backing up a backup!
