iMac Question - Complete Newbie Here!

Hi guys,

I have just made the switch from windows to mac, and now have the iMac. I was just browsing the settings on the system and was wondering which one I need to have the display set to? The one it's on just says iMac, but there is one that says Adobe RGB and a few others on there too. Does it matter which I have it on? I would like my photos to look as accurate as possible.

I recently edited on my husbands macbook and it looked great... until I just viewed it today on my own computer and it had some black areas not black!

This is the photo I mean:

And one of his shades had a light purple in the middle rather than it being all black, so I had to go and correct on my computer. It looked fine on the husbands macbook however. This is why I am wondering if I need to change the screen settings at all.
 
Hi, I also changed to Imac around 10 months ago. Best thing I did. Takes some getting used to at first.

To get a true display, you need to calibrate the display. I use Datacolor Spyder Pro3 however there are others available.

I will google what you just told me as it really doesn't mean anything to me right now! I thought it may be the case that it would need calibrating!

Without a calibrated monitor, you may be a image looking nice on your screen but when you post it online it probably won't look that way to others with calibrated screens. Also when you spend a while getting the image colour correct and send it to print the image may look completely different when printed.

You may also want to ask whoever does your printing for their ICC Profiles. But one step at a time and get the monitor calibrated first.

To me it's a waste of time editing photos on your screen if you don't have it calibrated.
