After initially becoming 'in love' with apple's product, I am now getting seriously ****ed off
with this problem I am having with internet loading speeds.
It is definitely the imac. My nackered old vista laptop sat next to it has no problem loading pages in milliseconds.
At times, the mac can take 30 seconds for an all text page. other times it is normal.
Any ideas what my problem is?

Try loading the same pages with Safari. This will help you determine if the problem is with ff or network settings.

It's wireless Gary.
It would be a bit of a chew to wire it.
This problem has been creeping in for a couple of weeks. Started happening occasionally, and is now
becoming a frigging nightmare.

Sound like a DNS problem. Try a web page from the IP address - BBC > 212.58.224.138

Adrian, every other machine in the household is running fine.

I think this problem is due to the fact that apples belong on trees or in a pie smothered in custard.

**** Apple.

Can you connect by Ethernet cable briefly and just for a test? If that works, then I'd be thinking about a new player in your locality on the same frequency.

Sorry but don't understand your reasoning?

His old laptop connects no problem.

I think he's right about trees, myself!

Check the network settings on the Mac. In the DNS settings it should probably just have the IP address of your router.

I have no problems with Apples or Windows on my (wireless) network :p

try flushing your DNS resolver cache, by going into the terminal and typing

dscacheutil -flushcache

It's not a destructive process, so should be fine.

When you get the problem, am I right in assuming it eventually loads the page?

Pages do load, they just take time.
When I first turned on this morning it was loading fine but within a couple of minutes it started running poor again.

Get your ISP's preferred DNS server addresses from you router config page.

then go System Preferences>Network>Airport>Advanced>DNS Tab and remove the entry that is in there (which should be the same as your router address). Try adding in the two entries you got from the router. Log out and back in again and see if that improves the situation.

Tried this and nothing has changed Emily.

I've been right through my router and can't find any address for DNS.
Everything that refers to it is just blank spaces.

Okies - which ISP are you with and what router make are you using?

Further replies may be delayed due to excessive alcohol consumption.

:) Just on my way out too.

Virgin Media and Netgear Wireless-G Router WGR614v9.

Have a good one.

Can you check the Router Status page (it's under the Maintenance section ) and see if anything is listed under Domain Name Servers there please.

Yes there are two IP addresses there. I will try what you suggested earlier and let you know the result.

VM's own dns servers aren't very good. I changed to the google ones and browsing sped up immensely.

id suggest its not DNS if the windows laptop is using the same details.

i would echo about trying a cable connection temporarily to rule out wireless issues on the iMac.

:agree:

install the latest update to the airport software, by clicking the apple and going to about this mac, then clicking software update

:)

I moved everything downstairs last night and sat in the hallway for about one hour. It was running sweet.
That's it, or so I thought. Took it back upstairs and it ran just as sweet wirelessly.
I'm now suspecting intermittent fault with router or modem.

One other thing to consider, would my son on PS3 live drag the network down enough for it to suffer slowdown?

I have not tried Kasalic's suggestion yet because I want it running slow first to see if the changes make an immediate impact.
As soon as the problem starts, I will give that a try.

Cheers.

I've had this with my MBP - in the end, backed it up in Time Machine, did an erase and reinstall on the MBP and reinstalled from my TM back-up.... seamless process that took an hour or so and meant I didn't have to go through the pallaver of reinstalling applications. Now works lightning quick, although i do have a wierd issue with YouTube not working right, but it's been like that for 2 years so I'm sued to it.....
