iMac running slow

Do you have firefox installed? If so is there any delay there?

Have you tried resetting Safari using the "Reset Safari" setting which you get to by clicking on Safari in the title bar.

Are you connected wirelessly or wired?

Have you tried checking the speed and quality of your internet connection? - Just try this <LINK>

if the umbrella is spinning whilst to load pages it would indicate the problem is with the machine not the internet connection.

I find Firefox is unreliable on a Mac, what does Safari run like?

Not necessary hence me running through a check list of things. We have worked out so far that it is not Safari OR Firefox because it happens with both leaving us with an OS issue, router issue etc which we can now try and locate where the problem lies. If we can remove the connection from the list we narrow it further.

its wireless, i did the test and the results are terrible!!
eed Down 1795.38 Kbps ( 1.8 Mbps )
Speed Up 714.70 Kbps ( 0.7 Mbps )

its ment to be a 20mb connection with virgin.

it does run faster if i reset the computer, but that only lasts 5 mins ish then slows down again.

I had a simular problem & purchased Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner ($7.99). This optimized my internet plus a host of other things. The result was it sped up my internet. I know run it regularly for all my maintainance work.

It does seem like its a machine based problem, your ISP results are pretty poor but not poor enough to affect you like that.

Have you reset your browser, if you have done that and there is still no joy repair your permissions, If I find my mac is running slow I do that and it sharpens everything up.

Let me know how you get on.

I think you would have to reset firefox through terminal, Ill have a look for you.

To repair permissions go to disk utility and click on your HD, it will bring up four tabs on the right, Click on first aid then repair permissions on the bottom.

Download and run Onyx. It's free and will clean up your files and repair permissions for you.

It's not going to work with two people trying to sort this at the same time so I'll go back to watching TV.

i have cleared the disk utility, seems to be running better now. i will post back on here if i have any more problems.

thank you all for your help

Hi again,
the problem has still been happening.

it seems to be when i run more than 2 tabs in firefox, and the longer i stay online the slower it gets...but if i reset the computer is speeds up again.

any ideas?

Since you only just bought your mac you have free telephone support from Apple. They will be able to help you more than any of us on here. Furthermore, if they cannot solve the problem it may be a hardware issue in which case they will get it sorted for you pretty quickly.

I have always found Apple support to be very helpful. ;)

I had a friend who had a similar problem ( on a PC though) with NTL just before they all merged.

He had some network training so figured that the problem wasn't at his end. So he contacted the NTL help desk. After going through the usual , "Have you tried switching it of and back on again" he finaly convinced them he knew what he was talking about. He was passed onto a "Supervisor" who identified the "line" he was on was reaching the maximum number of subscribers, switched him to another less crowded one and he got his speed back again.

As you only seem to be getting 1.8G on a 20G line ( or up to as they say) it may be network density that's causing the problem. I'd have a word with Virgin Media and put the problem well and truly on their shoulders.

I got my iMac throught the university because of my dyslexia and was told not to put any of my own software on it (eg photoshop) even *** i do a photography degree. so cant really ring them and thats who will be the support for the item.

i may try ringing virgin ***.

Sounds like you got a virus!!!! You did install the virus protection right???

TEE HE HE HE HE sniggers and runs off....:boxer::exit:

The chances of a Mac getting a virus are pretty slim as there are not that many Mac viruses. There is malware and other nasties around, but I've not found any myself. However that is not a reason to ignore the threat.

However, you could try turning OFF the AV software and see if things sped up. I noticed that Norton on my old PC slowed things down ( it came free). Switched to McAfee and things were a lot beter.

I run iAntiVirus from PC tools ( Yes the free version) on both my Mac's . Not because I'm overly paranoid, but coming from a PC environment I take viruses seriously, This doesn't seem to slow anything down.
