Will the 24" iMac 2.66 system be plenty good enough to do Aperture and CS4 work on it without it struggling or is it best getting the next model up for extra £300?
 
It will do fine, I have the 2.4 model which is 1.5 years old and it romps along not issues.

When you get one, just remember to get your additional ram from crucial and not the apple shop it will be alot cheaper.

Whack in 4 gig and away you go... You might want to try lightroom as well I got the mac specifically for aperture and it is a great program but the new editing tools in lightroom are great and just tipped the balance for me as now half of the images I work on do not have to touch PS as I can do the less complicated edits in LR.

Should be fine. I've never used aperture but have run photoshop on my mac mini.

Make sure you max out the memory, don't buy memory from Apple though as it's much cheaper elsewhere. I always use crucial memory.

Since you have used aperture and lightroom I guess your liking lightroom better then? How do you find the file management in it then? Also how did you get all images from Aperture over to lightroom?
 
yes, it will run well. I run Aperture on my 2.4ghz 4Gb macbook.

Max out the RAM though from Cruicial.


Switching between LR or Aperture you just import the raw or jpgs into the library and assign into projects or collections. You'll loose any edits you may have done in one though but the controls are pretty similar.

Try the demos of each and decide which you like best.

But all my raw are in the aperture library at the moment and it be a pain getting them all out into Lightroom I guess?? I do like lightroom to be honest but this has stopped me as I have about 12gig of images in the aperture library
 
Just as Andrewc stated, I keep a back up of all my raw images on an external drive and when I import from cards the first part of the workflow in Lightroom is to ensure they are copied to that location and the catalogue at the same time.

Guess I be buggered then having to get all the raw out of my aperture lib then. Within Lightroom can i keep the files in current location or is it best to build a catalogue
 
I did not have to worry about that as mine was a referenced library and not a managed one so my Raw files were always on the external drive.

I will have a play and see if there is an easy way for the raws to be extracted / exported.

Someone else might have the answer before I get back..

That be great and if this can be done easily where the best place to buy lightroom at a great price? as like people say it got great feature and CS4 may not be needed. With aperture I dont have much power to edit stuff that why i like lightroom and only got 3 days left on trail :(
 
Its just a matter of preference I think, I like to be able to back up a drive completely with out all the edits and stuff so I have independent external drives, one for the RAW files and one for the Lightroom Library.

That way I can back up both on to additional drives. (I basically mirror them one a month)

12 gig is not that bad a deal, when I swapped over I had to import and start working on 185 gig of raw files. That does not include the two other drives I have not even started on yet.

Just wonder if you found a easy way for me ?
 
Well I only have aperture and Trail of CS4 as I can afford to buy CS4 Yet as I think I need to buy a new iMac. As i currently have a MBP 2.16 and it struggles ..
 
The only things to consider with the 2.93 model is the extra processing power which is about 20% of so if i recall, and the better graphics card with the separate rather than shared RAM. If you want it to last for a number of years, I would consider the extra power an adantage, especially for next generation application (whatever they may be).

That is weird. I've seen the older iMacs running CS3 Design Premium and Lightroom 2 without skipping a beat.

And IIRC user-upgraded memory isn't covered by AppleCare?
