Image File Size Question

Sorry everyone as I'm sure this must have been asked loads of times before, but after a quick search I was unable to find anything. I can only presume I was searching the wrong thing.

My question is basically about the confusion with image sizes that I encountered as explained below.

I had a load of images that I needed to resize etc. Some of them were slightly cropped but windows explorer said they were all about 8mb jpeg files. I opened them all in Photoshop CS3 for resizing and when I got to this point, it was suggesting the image files were around 21mb. After resizing (to 1500 px long side) it was claiming the file sizes were around 5mb each.

Then when burning the 26 images to a disc windows explorer is suggesting the total folder size is 12mb and that each image is a couple of hundred kb.

Why is this? Which is correct?
Can somebody clear this up for me as its got me VERY confused!

Also the images remained jpegs throughout the whole process and were jpegs from a D300. Some had also been cropped using Lightroom before the CS3 resizing.

Thanks in advance!
Alex

Image size =/= file size

Image size is what you see in CS3 and this is what is important for uploading to Alamy (and other companies I'm sure)

Think the confusion is between compressed size (as in saved as a jpeg) and uncompressed which is how PS probably sees it during editing.

Thats excellent. Thanks a lot - it was an issue as I may need to be uploading files with sizes in excess of 45mb so then just a bit of bicupic sampling (I think thats it) to get it to the right size and then that would be problem solved! I was wondering how I would get an image file size of 8mb up to 45mb but this makes a bit more sense now.

Am I right in thinking that to get it to 45mb the best way would be by bicubic sampling rather than just increasing image dimensions to meet the demands?

Thanks again!

If you use the search there are a few threads on images sizes for uploading

Like this one which was found with a search for "alamy image size"
