image file size to send via email?

I believe for a long time that 1MB was the max. I always resized my images or any other attachment to under this, recently though I've realised much larger files can be sent via e-mail.
I would be interested to know if anyone has the answer to this.

Looks like Gmail is 10MB on the old version and 20MB on the new, however remember to allow some space for the code that goes with it - sending onthe limit will probably fail. Remember also that success will depend on what size attachments the recipient can accept. Sometimes larger files can be sent by using a .zip programme to reduce size.

I send my big files via http://max.mailbigfile.com/, I think the limit (from memory) is 2Gb.
Correction, it's 200Mb for the free service, 2Gb is for the pro service.
