Just recentley i've noticed the image in the viewfinder jumping and the lens not obtaining focus lock when i press the shutter button. If i then point to another object the jumping will stop and the lens will focus. Is this normal?

are you using it on a tripod with the IS on? It's first gen IS, so you have to turn it off for tripods, or it can act erratically and actually create blur.

Are you trying to focus on objects too close? Have you accidentally switched the limiter to 6.5m to inf, and are trying to focus on objects close than 6.5m? Or are you trying to focus on an object with too little contrast, and the AF can't get a lock?

Those are all the explanations I can think of, if it isn't one of them, then it'll need a trip to a canon service centre.

Mine doesn't tend to act up with IS. If you move it around fast with the IS on, it can jump a little bit in mode 1 (If you're trying to pan in low light, you want IS mode 2), but if you hold it reasonably steady, I rarely if ever get it acting up.

I get this sometimes, I think it's when the camera battery is getting a bit low.

But I stand to be corrected.

@ Squishy all handheld, checked all switches there where they should be, I have noticed that the object i'm trying to shoot is sometimes darker, and when i point to a brighter lit subject it stops jumping and i get focus lock.
@ tlr i did notice lunchtime that the battery only had one bar on it so it's on charge now, if that is the problem i'll let you know.

could be the battery, since the IS sucks up power.

Just a quick update, it was the battery. Fully charged now no jumping and focus lock straight away.

Happy Days

Nice to know. If I ever get this with mine, I'll just change batteries quickly.
