Yes
I've taken a few shots this weekend and on looking through the images later I've found around 8 of the images have been lost. They were deffinately on the memory card earlier but for no apparant reason they have gone from my card. I'm using a 4GB Sandisk extreme 3 card in my D90,, has anyone else had this problem? or have any Idea why this could happen so I can try to prevent it in the future.

Never heard of that before :(

Just a though but have you looked to see if the remaining images are consecutively numbered or if you have a gap of 8 numbers in the sequence?

Just thinking out loud, but if there is a gap in the numbers there's a good chance the images are actually there and could be retrievable with Rescue Pro or similar. If there is no gap in the numbering I'd suggest the images, for whatever reason, aren't there.

Try some recovery software and see if it can find them. As asked earlier are the missing frames sequential or more random? If sequential are they the last images taken? I had a problem several years ago that was not dissimilar. Turned out it was a card problem. The controller inside the card couldn't access the higher memory. On formatting it seemed OK but stopped recording after about 75% of the card was full. Consigned to bin

i have read all the answers here and thought the same
a...are the images at the end
b...the numbering thing
c...card full but not showing in the viewfinder

were you using raw

The photo's are mid order and there is a gap in the numerical order of the recorded photo's, there should be plenty of room on the card as it's a 4GB card with only 64 photo's on there. I'll try the recovery software and see what I can find, it's no real problem as the pictures weren't really good or important ones but I don't want to lose any in the future that are. I might go for a new memory card anyway just to be on the safe side.

when you are finished with the shots on your card do you

a..delete all
b..format new

olympus told me to always reformat each time

Yes I do delete all but dont always format, that's something I'll do in future now too even if it's only a remote chance it could help.

Hi

Sorry I can't help you with this but I had the opposite query yesterday. I was using a 4gb Sandisk and shooting in jpeg. When I started, it said I had '999' shots available. The first 100 or so didn't seem to be deducted from the '999'. I then went on to shoot abut 1300 jpegs on the card. I hardly changed the settings (speed and iso etc). I can't understand it.

Its because the count is an estimate Lisa, different shots use different amounts of storage. .... Plain and simple images make for less data, as do those with white backgrounds say. Complicated shots require much more space, the counts probably biased towards the max for each shot for safety....hence the much lower guess count.

you could have corruption in the FAT table. Try a recovery program. If it recovers data, be extremely worried about the card.

IF You manage a recover, or no longer want the data
Re-format the card using the camera.
Then test the data integrity. With disks, I usually use an industry standard/recognised test called iozone, it can be gotten from www.iozone.org
Whilst primarily for benchmarking/speed testing, the advantage of iozone is that it makes several write patterns to the disk, and then confirms that the data is read from the disk the same. This isn't going to test the FAT part of the disk too much. Apart from writing thousands of small files, or moving the partition boundaries it isn't easy to test.

Thanks for the help folks, I have misplaced my sandisk recovery software disc that came with one of my memory cards so thats a none starter. I'll have a look round and download some software and go from there. I have a new card on the way anyway and I'll format the cards more often in the future.
Thanks for the link coldpenguin I'll give that a look too

i had a similar situation i cut all the pics of my card to my pc

after a half hour i realised some where missing i oculdnt work out what had happened

so i looked back on the memory card and there they was i know for a fact i cut all of them

when it had finished it showed nothing on the memory card so i closed the app down luckly if found them before a format happened
