Image size for galleries

Been looking at a few photo galleries to put on my webspace, I'm not looking for any recommendations on a particular gallery, there are plenty on TP to choose from.

What would like to know what is the best image size to use on a photo gallery to view online. I know 72pixels is the ideal res.

320 x 240? (I susect will be too small for most of todays monitors)

640 x 480, 1024 x 768 or larger?

I don't want my pics looking pretty much like thumbnails but a reasonable size on screen, then again I don't want viewers having to scroll downwards/sideways to view the whole pic either.

I'd resize images to fit within 800x600, it means that portrait images are a lot smaller. Although the ideal is obviously some magic code that shrinks them below that size when the user has a smaller browser window.

What type of photos arer they (landscape/portraits/weddings etc) and are you using it purely to show off your portfolio or to try and get business?
