Can someone put me on track please regarding set up of image size ?
My digital compact has 6 format sizes ranging from 2816x2112 through to 640x480 and my dslr has sizes of L M S which I am assuming to be large med. and small ?
Now I know that the larger size I choose takes more memory and therefore more of my space = less images per card (sd) but how do I choose a size as until I have seen the image on a large screen i.e. laptop etc I am never sure how large I am going to print off image .
I normally print snaps from hols. on 7x5 inch paper but specials I am pleased with I print off a4 .

Personally I would shoot at maximum available size (in raw and jpeg simultaneously if possible) and then have the flexibility to crop if I felt like it or print big without loss of detail.
Memory cards arent "that" expensive, I just bought a 4GB for about £18, which compared to everything else photographic is cheap, a ruined photo because of lack of size might have cost a lot more in terms of what it cost to be in that position to take it.

As above. Memory cards with large capacities are so cheap nowadays that it's a non-issue. A 16GB card can be had for £20-30, and depending on your camera will store from several hundred to a thousand or two photos at the highest quality setting.

How much is missing out on being able to print that beautiful one-off photo at a decent size worth?

The ONLY time I ever use smaller than max is when I know that the particular shot Im taking will be uploaded straight to the web and not being printed or having any work done to it.
This is only usually snapshots of something I need to show someone quickly.
Otherwise, its full size and full quality.

Hi. Doing the math, that equates to 6mp camera. Pays to use all the megapixels you paid for and (to repeat) memory is quite affordable. You can always make an image smaller but very hard to make one bigger.
You can crop for composition, etc and you will still have enough mp to get a good quality print. I've printed A3 from a 5mp camera, so its quite possible, but only if you use all the pixels.

Thanks all of you for your help I will alter my cameras to max for both image size and quality .
